Nia Nicole Abdallah (born January 24, 1984 in Houston, Texas) is the 2004 Olympic silver medalist and the first U.S. woman to officially medal in Taekwondo at the Olympics. Abdallah was introduced to Taekwondo by her stepfather when she was nine years old. He and her mother recognized her athleticism even at this young age. She went on to become one of the best practitioners of her sport in the world, first as a Junior Olympic champion, then in open class international competition. While trying to qualify for her 2nd Olympics, Nia found herself at the center of controversy. Diana Lopez was receiving national attention for her hopes of joining her two brothers representing the USA in tae kwon do. After 3 rounds of the final bout between Nia and Diane had concluded, no points had been scored (even though Nia had knocked down Diana several times and had made clear contact to her body and head) and the two were matched in a "sudden death" situation. The first to land a kick wins. Nia landed several obvious kicks but the bout continued until Diana threw a kick that was blocked by Nia's arm, yet counted as the winning kick. The video of the bout went viral over the internet. Nia was devastated but continued to represent her country admirably in subsequent tournaments. 2009 U.S. National Team Member (Welter) [edit] Referencehttp://usa-taekwondo.us/athletes/2435
