[edit] History

[edit] Early history

They were one of the original four BUAFL teams which began play in the 1985–86 season (along with Teesside, Hull and Manchester). After this first season, Raiders' success in the following season saw them come close to becoming national champions however they were on the losing end of the inaugural College Bowl of 1987.

From 1985–1990 the team was known as the Newcastle Scholars, and from 1990–2002 they were known as the Newcastle Mariners. Newcastle did not compete in the 1991–92 season.

[edit] Recent history

In the 2007–2008 season the Raiders reached the national semi-finals, where they marginally lost to the Staffs. The Raiders are currently undefeated through 11 games this season and faced Loughborough in the Northern Conference final, where they won in the last 5 minutes of the game, with the final score of 30-14. They faced Birmingham Lions in the College Bowl, held in South Leeds Stadium on 5 April 2009.[1]

[edit] Locations

The interior of Gateshead International Stadium, one of the venues which the Raiders use.

The Raiders play and train at locations which are north and south of the city of Newcastle, where the University is based. North of the city centre the Raiders play and train at Longbenton Sports Ground, and south of the city, in the town of Gateshead the Raiders play the Gateshead International Stadium.
