The New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) was the government department that operated the New South Wales Government's railways until the establishment of the Public Transport Commission in 1972. Although later known officially as the Department of Railways, New South Wales, it was still generally referred to as the NSWGR by the public. In the 1960s the department was also identified by the initials NSWTD. The last Commissioner for Railways was Mr Neil McCusker. The NSWGR built all of their track to the 4 ft 81⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge. The NSWGR ran its first official passenger train on 26 September, 1855 from Sydney Terminal (now Redfern) to Parramatta (now Granville). [edit] See alsoRail transport in New South Wales
