The Nell Gwyn Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain which is open to three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in mid April. The event was established in 1961, and it is named after Nell Gwyn (1650–1687), an English actress who was the mistress of King Charles II. It serves as one of the main trials for the 1,000 Guineas Stakes, which is run at the same venue in late April or early May. The most recent horse to win both races was Speciosa in 2006. The Nell Gwyn Stakes is presently run in memory of Leslie Harrison, a long-time racing and breeding manager for Lord Howard de Walden's Plantation Stud in Newmarket, who died in February 2007. [1]
