The National Civil Aviation Agency (Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil in Portuguese), also known as ANAC, is the Brazilian civil aviation authority and it was created in 2006. It is part of the Brazilian Ministry of Defence and is headquartered in the country's capital, Brasília, in the central part of the country and around 570 miles (917 km) from Rio de Janeiro and 540 miles (869 km) from São Paulo, the most relevant Brazilian economical region. The Agency raised from the former Department of Civil Aviation (DAC) and the Civil Aviation Certification Division (Aeronautical Technical Center - CTA), the Brazilian aircraft certification authority. In Brazil, ANAC is responsible for regulating safety and security matters related to civil aircraft and its components, personnel licensing, operations and aerodromes.
