Nanyang Junior College (NYJC) is a junior college which is part of the education system in Singapore, offering a two-year course for pre-university students that leads up to the GCE 'A' Level examinations. Previously known as Lorong Chuan Junior College, NYJC was founded in 1977, and was among the first junior colleges to be established in Singapore. A year later, in 1978, it was renamed Nanyang Junior College. The name "Nanyang" is hanyu pinyin for the Chinese characters representing "South Sea", which was what the mainland Chinese people referred to the region encompassed by Singapore, Malaysia and the Southeast Asian region. The name is a reflection of the origins of Singapore having been built by immigrants from predominantly China, India, Malaysia, as wells as, other parts of the world. The badge of the Junior College has a picture of a Merlion on a red background above a sea, and its motto is "Together We Build".
[edit] Information[edit] History[edit] TriviaNanyang Junior College was founded as Lorong Chuan Junior College in 1977 at its current location in Serangoon Ave 3, Singapore. The first Principal was Mr Chia Khoon Hock, who served the college for 19 years until his retirement in 1995. For a list of subsequent Principals, see below. As NYJC's campus was built on a small hill, fog often covered part of the college in the 1980s and 1990s and NYJC was known affectionally as “白云岗” (Mandarin, literally meaning "White Cloud Hill", for the fog that covered it). This is also the inspiration for the brand-name of the college's Chinese Cultural Society's annual drama production. NYJC opened up the Chinese Language Elective Programme in 1997, and till date has produced many scholarship holders in the Chinese Language field. Today, the college is a centre for the Art Elective Programme. [edit] EnrollmentAs of August 2009, the enrolment of the college is 1629 (895 Year 1, 734 Year 2). There are 143 teaching staff and 20 Executive and Admin Support (EAS) Staff.

[edit] UniformBoys wear a plain peach-coloured shirt with peach pants. This is similar to that of girls, with that of peach-coloured skirts. The former uniform, which was of a deeper brown, was completely phased out in 2008. The college insignia, its collar pin, which bears the school emblem, is worn on the left collar of shirt. The school tie, which was formerly worn on Wednesdays, is now worn primarily during formal school events and assemblies. Brown blazers are also only worn on special occasions. Attire for PE is a T-shirt with blue and white shoulder stripes and black shorts that bear the school initials, NYJC. In 1998, the T-shirt was changed from red and blue to brown. [edit] AnthemThe original college anthem was composed by M. Cheng, Leow Wee Seong (lyrics) and L. Fang (melody). The English version is sung in assemblies and college functions. The third stanza was removed in 2001, shown here in light blue. In 2006, the school management committee decided that the school anthem was in need of "a refreshment". In January 2007, the College's Symphonic Band had retuned the school song that is played every Wednesday. The tune has since been incorporated [1]
[edit] PledgeThe college pledge was introduced during the thirtieth anniversary celebrations in 2007. [2]

[edit] Special programmesApart from the Art and Language Elective Programmes, the college also has a Scholars' Development Programme where selected NYJCians of high calibre are encouraged to take up leadership positions in the college to help them attain scholarships in the future. [edit] Student Organisation and leadership[edit] AcademicLike all colleges, NYJC offers Science and Arts streams academic programmes. However, it is one of the few colleges in Singapore not allocating an 'S' to Science classes and 'A' to Arts classes since the new system was introduced in 2006. It is also one of the few colleges that does not hold morning assemblies at the conventional 7.30am or 7.40am. (at 8.30am instead, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only) [edit] Co-curricular activity (CCA) groupsThe college encourages participation in co-curricular activities for the all-round development of the individual. [edit] Official CCAsThese are CCAs recognised by the college officially, with funding and equipment provided. [edit] Student Interest GroupsStudent Interest Groups (SIGs) are formed by a group of students who pursue common interests in the realms of sports or arts. Since SIGs are not given any funding and equipment, when an SIG becomes well established it can petition for official CCA status.
[edit] Student CouncilThe Student Council is formed by a group of 30 to 40 councillors elected by the student population. Headed by an Exco, there are three committees in the Student Council - Welfare, Communications and College Image and Bonding. NYJC is the first Student Council in Singapore to have a Twitter account to update the student population on college events and plans of the Student Council. The Student Council is the peak of student leadership in NYJC. [edit] House Executive CommitteeHouses are separate from the Student Council in NYJC. The House Executive Committee (House Exco) is also elected democratically and comprises representatives of the four houses with at least a House captain and vice-captain. It manages internal events within the College on a smaller scale compared to the Student Council. Unlike the Student Council, the House Exco does not take charge of student well-being directly. [edit] Civics Tutorial CongressNYJC has a CT Congress where all Class Chairpersons and Vice chairpersons are members of the Congress. [edit] Notable alumni
