[edit] History

Main Entrance of NITT Campus

The Regional Engineering College at Tiruchirappalli was started as a co-operative venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view of catering to the needs of manpower in technology for the country. The college has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to achieve rapid development. The institution was granted Deemed University status with the approval of the UGC/AICTE and Government of India in the year 2003[2] and renamed as National Institute of Technology. NITT was registered under Societies Registration Act XXVII of 1975.

The Chairman, Mr. R. Seshasayee of Ashok Leyland Ltd. was elected to office in 2005 and Dr. M. Chidambaram has been the Director of the institute since 2005. Presently the institute is undergoing an accelerated growth phase through the World Bank funded Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP).

The vision of NITT is to contribute to India and the World through excellence in scientific and technical education; to serve as a valuable resource for industry and society; and increase the human values and sustain the heritage of India. The values include Academic integrity and Accountability, Equality, Social Relevance, Intellectual Excellence and Creativity, and Entrepreneurship. Its mission is:

  • To promote academic growth by offering state-of-the-art undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs.
  • To generate new knowledge by engaging in cutting-edge research.
  • To identify, based on an informed perception of Indian, regional and global needs, areas of specialization upon which the Institute can concentrate.
  • To undertake collaborative projects which offer opportunities for long-term interaction with academia and industry.
  • To develop human potential to its fullest extent of intellectual capability.[3]

Admissions to undergraduate courses at NITT is competitive and is through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE). There are a few seats for NRI(Non resident Indian) and DASA students. Admission to graduate programs requires competitive scores in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and National Institute of Technology MCA Common Entrance Test (NIMCET).

NITT follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs).[4].

In addition, NITT also accepts foreign nationals through scholarships under the Government of India[5], and Non-Resident Indians or Persons of Indian Origin, for undergraduate programs through an independent scheme known as the Direct Admission for Students Abroad. (DASA)[6].

Admission to the architecture program is through the Architecture Exam of the AIEEE[7].
