For the cricketer, see Munir Malik. Muneer A. Malik (Muneer is also spelled Munir) is a very prominent Pakistani lawyer and key leader of the Lawyers' Movement in Pakistan. He is the former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan, SCBA. He was the leader of the legal defense team of Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry when the latter was illegally dismissed by general Pervez Musharraf. He was arrested after Musharraf declared a state of emergency, initially admitted at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences on 25 November 2007, seriously ill and under treatment for kidney failure with dialysis. He was transferred to Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation in Karachi, where he still requires renal replacement theray in the form of hemodialysis. Some reports indicate that he has developed liver dysfunction also. It is unknown if he has acute renal failure versus chronic renal failure stage 5 requiring dialysis. Acute renal failure can be caused by a condition called 'Rhabdomyolysis' which can be as a result of muscle damage associated with physical abuse and beating which he has refuted. However, he complained about psychological abuse, laying for prolonged periods in one posture can lead to pressure necrosis of muscles causing release of myoglobin and rhabdomyolysis. On the other hand, chronic renal failure stage 5 can be progression of diseases like diabetes and hypertension. It is unknown what kind of renal failure this stalwart lawyer suffers from. Dehydration caused by denying access to fluids can be a causative factor in rhabdomyolysis induced renal failure and so is certain drugs toxicity like statins for hypercholestrolemia. With acute or chronic renal failure on dialysis he is immunosuppressed and vulnerable to life threatening sepsis or and pneumonia. Imran Khan has expressed his grave concerns about his health and has blamed government for his ill health. He has criticized government to deny him of access to clean drinking water when he was under arrest in Attock jail.He said he would hold government responsible if (god forbid)anything is to happen to Muneer A.Malik. Any false imprisonment in a civilized society is subject to civil and or criminal litigation. Without a probable cause even President of the United States is not immune for such actions. However, the doctors at the Pakistan Institute of Sciences (PIMS) conducted a toxicology screen and ruled out any foul play. One of the lawyer leaders,Athar Minallah Advocate,is on the Board of PIMS. The Pakistan government reportedly has denied any role in Munir's illness and has attributed it to his chronic alcoholism resulting in Cirrhosis of the liver and subsequent liver-kidney failure called Hepatorenal syndrome.Munir Malik has not pursued any charges against an individual or the Pakistani government and neither has sought an independent medical opinion. [edit] Role in reinstatement of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad ChaudhryAfter the suspension and arrest of Iftikhar Chaudhry on 9th of March, Muneer Malik was one of the first people to contact him and assure the unconditional support of Lawyers. Talking to the media on March 9, 2007 he said, "This is a callous conspiracy of the highest order against superior judiciary."[1] On 7 June 2007 he said "The judiciary should play its role as “A-team” of the people of Pakistan unlike its previous role when according to him it had been playing role of “Mr T., Murdoch, and Face, the good-looking one who got more ass than a toilet seat” of the army"[2]. For his role in the lawyers' movement he has been decorated with a number of awards, including the Dorab Patel Rule of Law Award conferred by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, the Human Rights Defender Award of the Asian Human Rights Commission that he shared with successor as President SCBA, Aitzaz Ahsan and the Gwangju Prize for Human Rights 2008. [edit] Attempt on LifeOn 10 May 2007, Muneer A Malik was watching TV at 3:00 am at his home in DHA when he heard bullets being fired that hit the upper portion of his house where his son and other family members were present.
