Multimedia Entertainment (formerly Avco Embassy Television) was a American television production/distribution company originally formed in 1968.

[edit] History

Its first name was Avco Embassy Television back in 1968 as a television production/distribution company by the then-known Avco Embassy Pictures. The company was originally responsible for television distribution of the Embassy film library. In addition, Avco Embassy Television concentrated on its own in-house productions. One of its first programs was The Phil Donahue Show in 1970.

[edit] As Multimedia Entertainment

After Avco Embassy Pictures Corporation sold Avco Embassy Television to Multimedia, Inc., the company was renamed to Multimedia Entertainment and the name was changed as a television production and distribution company in 1976. The company was known for producing talk shows, including Sally Jessy Raphael, Donahue, The Rush Limbaugh Show, and The Jerry Springer Show. Avco Embassy Pictures still remained the same when it was sold to Norman Lear in 1982 and renamed to Embassy Pictures.

Gannett acquired Multimedia, Inc. in 1995, thus Multimedia Entertainment was sold to Seagram's Universal Studios in 1996 and was merged into Universal Television Enterprises in 1997. The remaining series that were survived were later distributed under that name and later by Studios USA from 1998-2002 after Universal Television was sold to Barry Diller along with the USA Networks. Universal Television then became a part of NBC Universal in 2004 as part of the NBC merger, and the unit is currently known as NBC Universal Television Distribution.
