[edit] History

Mt St Patrick is a co-educational Secondary College operating within the system administered by the Catholic Education Office. It caters to grades 7-12. It was opened in 1926 by the Presentation Sisters and was administered and staffed by them until 1989. It derives its name from St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, whose feast day is celebrated by both the College and local communities.

[edit] Mission and Goals

Mt St Patrick aims at providing for the total development of its pupils, spiritually, intellectually, physically, morally, socially, emotionally and culturally and through a sound education based on Christian, and especially Catholic, principles in an atmosphere that is itself a production of the application of these principles. The College serves the Catholic Parishes of Mullumbimby and Murwillumbah.

Mt. St. Patrick's owes many of its traditions to the Presentation Sisters, Priests and the local community of past generations.

To ensure the continuity of these traditions the College aims to:

  • 1. develop a spiritual person who believes in, and acts according to a God centred perspective of human life; in line with the Parish mission statement.
  • 2. provide a secure environment for students and staff where the rights of the individual are respected and each person is treated with dignity, fairness and compassion.
  • 3. equip students with the skills necessary to participate in and make a positive contribution to a changing society.
  • 4. endeavour to provide a varied curriculum which encourages excellence and caters for the needs of a wide range of students in a changing educational environment.
  • 5. recognise parents as the primary educators of their children in the development of faith and morals and to strengthen the formal and informal communication between staff and parents.

[edit] College Houses

Students are divided into four houses. Each house in named after a person or place significant to the college and its establishment. The houses are; Lucan (Green), Nagle (Gold), Loreto (Blue) and Lisieux (Red). The houses compete for the St Patrick's Champion House Trophy which is presented to the winning house on St Patrick's Day every year. The winning house is determined by the acculated points each house receives through sporting and academic achievements of each of its students.

[edit] Academics

The College is the highest achieving school in its area regarding academics. Its students are encouraged to strive for academic success. The College's Year 12 students usually achieve impressive results in the Higher School Certificate

Following Year 7, students are graded into Intermediate, Standard and Advanced classes for Science, Religion, Mathematics and English, each student is put into a graded class according to their ability in the subjects. Students can move up into higher classes or down into lower classes based on their previous year's results. This method is used until students graduate.

In 2007 and 2008, the College was ranked the number one in Higher School Certificate results on the North Coast of New South Wales, Australia. And in 2009 was ranked within the top 20% of schools in the state.

[edit] Curriculum

Year 7-9 are required to do compulsory subjects which are set out by the Board of Studies, these include English, Mathematics, Art, Religion (because of school policy), Language Other Than English (was previously Italian and Japanese but now only offers French), Personal Health and Development, Music, History and Geography.
