Mount Temple Comprehensive School is a secondary school located in Clontarf, Dublin, Ireland, originally notable as the first multi-denominational public (state-funded) school under Protestant management to open in Dublin.

Mount Temple School is a non-fee paying, state comprehensive school under Protestant management. It was established in 1972 following the amalgamation of Mountjoy School, Hibernian Marine School and Bertrand and Rutland School. Today, Mount Temple provides a balanced, supportive and stimulating education in a co-educational, multi-denominational environment. The school caters for the individual needs of all students, ranging from those with exceptional abilities to those who require additional learning support. It does so within a community that expects tolerance, civilized behaviour and understanding. The school's ethos is based upon a Christian, civilized and caring tradition.

The school was established in 1972 following the amalgamation of Mountjoy School, Hibernian Marine School and Bertrand & Rutland School.

• Hibernian Marine School was a charity school founded in 1766, originally to provide for the orphans and children of seamen. The school was located on the Seafield Road in Clontarf, Dublin.

• Mountjoy School was a boarding school located on Mountjoy square, near O'Connell St. in the city centre, the School later moved to the current location in Clontarf (Mount Temple School's current location).

• Bertrand & Rutland School was a school located in Eccles Street in the north-side of Dublin.

Hibernian Marine School amalgamated with Mountjoy School in 1968 and became Mountjoy & Marine School the school later amalgamated with B & R and took the name of Mount Temple Comprehensive School in 1972. Also Mount Temple Comprehensive School main building is exactly the same as Newpark Comprehensive School.

[edit] Students

Mount Temple Comprehensive School has about 850 students of mixed gender, creed and nationality and prides itself on its unique diversity. As a comprehensive school it teaches both academic and practical subjects and extracurricular sport and music are a major part of Mount Temple life. Students may also be involved in other activities including drama, Amnesty International, Christian Union, English, Irish, French and German debating and public speaking.

The principal sports in Mount Temple are rugby union (boys) and hockey (boys and girls) but basketball, athletics, badminton, cricket and soccer are also played.

The Rugby team are very strong in the Leinster Section A Schools Cup competition, reaching the final in 2004, 2005 and 2007 but have not won the cup since 1998. The school generally produce two or three Leinster A representatives a season. Most notably Micheal Kearney represented the Ireland under 18s in 2009.

Last year the school won their first ever Leinster Schools Senior Boys 4x100 metre relay title and finished first in the All Irelands in Tullamore only to be disqualifed by a dubious call by the track judges.

Recently the 6th year students organised and ran the very first dodgeball tournament of the school's history which is now a growing sport in the school with the Inter-Malahide Road championship nearby.

The boys' hockey section has produced several interprovincial players and many players who have gone on to play at the highest levels. One of these such players is Luke Hayden who has secured his Place on the Leinster U18 squad in 2008.

In 2008, the minor boys hockey team won the Leinster 'B' League championship beating Dundalk Grammar School in the final. The minor girls hockey team also won the Northside 'A' League in 2008.

The recently established Under 18 Girls Soccer team reached the quarter finals and with the help of Mr. Clarke will hopefully continue and thrive in Mount Temple.

In April 2009 towards the end of "Bike Safety Week," a slow bicycle race was held on the playing fields. This event (combined with the best weather experienced all year) attracted an unprecedented amount of spectators, and scores of eager cyclists desperate to claim the grand prize.
