MRC's Logo

Mount Royal University (MRU) is a public undergraduate focused post-secondary institution in south-west Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Founded in 1910 as a primary and secondary school, Mount Royal became a post-secondary institution in 1931 as Mount Royal College (MRC) offering transfer courses to the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. It was renamed Mount Royal University in 2009 by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach.[4] MRU comprises thirteen schools, centres and faculties including the Bisset School of Business, the Faculty of Communications Studies, and the Conservatory (Music).

As of September 2009, MRU is still in the early stages of rebranding itself from Mount Royal College, and as such retains the credits, logos, and other branding connected with the old MRC moniker pending redesigns. As of mid-September 2009, the school's official website uses the outdated Mount Royal College logo, with the word "College" struck-through and the word "University" in script next to it.[5]

The Students Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) operates Wyckham House, a student centre housing dozens of student services, several food kiosks, a used bookstore, a copy centre, an eco-store and the Liberty lounge, the campus bar. SAMRU is owned and operated by Mount Royal credit students, and offers a variety of services for its members.

On October 29, 2009 the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) welcomed MRU as its 95th member institution [6], thus recognizing its degrees at a national and international level.

[edit] Housing

The Mount Royal campus houses more than 1,000 students who live in residence. These accommodations include single, two- and four-bedroom apartment units or one-, two-, or four-bedroom townhouses. Both types of housing feature access for students with disabilities. All suites are furnished with a fridge and stove. These units have notoriously thin walls, and have had issues with substandard or expired fire extinguishers. They also include telephone service with voicemail, high-speed broadband Internet and cable TV. Residence students also have access to games rooms, storage spaces, social rooms and laundry facilities and on-campus housing is close to Mount Royal’s recreation facilities and the library.

[edit] Athletics and Recreation

The Cougar collegiate athletics program competes in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. The Cougars compete in various sports including: hockey, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. Mount Royal Recreation enables students and the community to focus on healthy, active lifestyles through its facilities, services and programs. The Recreation Centre was expanded in 2002 and features five volleyball/basketball courts, a five-lane running track, fitness centre, pool, climbing and bouldering walls, multi-purpose studios and six squash courts. All credit students automatically become “recreation members” and receive member rates for all programs.

[edit] The Iniskim Centre

In 2007, Mount Royal opened this new facility created specifically to increase enrollment and retention of Aboriginal students. The centre is dedicated to fostering academic success for Aboriginal students and increasing awareness of distinct Aboriginal cultures, history and protocols. It offers a range of programs, from academic advising to aboriginal school housing to cultural and spiritual advising.
