There have been multiple fictional characters named Mortimer Mouse. Mortimer Mouse was the original name for Mickey Mouse. However, Lillian Disney, Walt Disney's wife, believed the name "Mortimer" sounded too pompous and suggested the name Mickey instead.
[edit] Minnie's UncleThe first was created by Floyd Gottfredson for The Walt Disney Company. He was Minnie Mouse's ranch-owning cattleman uncle. He first appeared in the comic strip Mickey Mouse in Death Valley (1930). After that, he appeared in many Mickey Mouse comic strip adventures in the early 1930s. He is named after the original name Disney gave Mickey. [edit] Mortimer MouseThe most famous character with the name is Mickey Mouse's biggest rival. Mortimer Mouse, Mickey's competition for Minnie's affections, was introduced in the 1936 cartoon short Mickey's Rival. In the comics, this Mortimer was briefly renamed Montmorency (Monty) Rodent (pronounced "Ro-Dawn"), in an attempt to differentiate him from the pre-existing uncle, but the new name did not stick. Mickey's rival was once again called Mortimer in later comics -- and in the animated series Mickey Mouse Works and House of Mouse, where he is known for his catchphrase, "Hot-cha-cha!" In House of Mouse and Mickey MouseWorks, Mortimer as Mickey's rival is voiced by Maurice LaMarche. As Minnie's boss in Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas, he was voiced by Jeff Bennet and speaks in a fancier voice. Mortimer Mouse occasionally appears in the newest Mickey Mouse show for preschoolers, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the Disney Channel. [edit] Charlene McCoyOutside of Disneydom, "The Adventures of Mortimer Mouse" is also a children's book by Charlene McCoy. [edit] OutlandMortimer Mouse was also the name of a character in Berkeley Breathed's comic strip Outland. As depicted there, he is a surly, stubbly, chain-smoking mouse who wears two-button shorts and has a bite taken out of one ear as a result of a scuffle with ex-Disney CEO Michael Eisner. He is presented as the estranged fraternal twin of Mickey. Disney threatened to sue Breathed over this character.[1] [edit] References[edit] External links
