Moreno is Spanish, Portuguese for a tanned or brown-skinned person. In origin the term was used to refer to a person with brown or black hair color, regardless of skin or eye color (synonym for Brunette), nowadays both meanings co-exist. It is also a Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian surname and an Italian given name.

The meaning of "moreno" in Spanish depends on what country you are in. For example, in Mexico moreno means a person with dark brown (but not black) skin, the color most indigenous and mestizos have. In Spain, on the other hand, a moreno is nothing more than someone with dark brown or black hair. In Portugal, as in Spain, "moreno" can be translated as "brunette". This was the original meaning of the word and the vast majority of Portuguese and Spaniards consider themselves to be "moreno"[citation needed]. Usually, in Portugal and Spain, "moreno" applies only to people of European descent. It is however true that in Portugal and Spain non-Europeans can be qualified as "morenos", but when it is so obvious, the term "moreno" is not usually applied[citation needed]. Moreno is strictly the reverse of blonde and as such, when speaking of "morenos" in Portugal and Spain, non whites do not come to mind[citation needed]. In Brazil, "moreno" is a very popular term and is usually not considered offensive; it might focus either on skin color or hair color, depending on context. Therefore, it could mean a brown skinned or a dark haired person, respectively.
