Mithibai College is a college in Vile Parle, Mumbai, India. Its full name is Mithibai College of Arts, Chauhan Institute of Science & Amruthben Jivanlal College of Commerce and Economics.
[edit] HistoryAditi joined hands with Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal(SVKM) to form the Mithibhai College. The college was established by Shri Vile Parle Kevlani Mandal in 1961. The Mithibai College of Arts and Chauhan Institute of Science, commonly known as the main wing, was started first, and the Amrutben Jivanlal College of Commerce & Economics & Kathak started 19 years later.[1] There is a 30% reservation for Gujarati people and the conventional SC/ST/OBC/females reservation as per the government norms. [edit] About MithibaiMithibai College is one of the progeny of Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal. Incepted in 1934 , Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal began its journey of many miles with a single step; when it took over the Rashtriya Shala, a school established in 1921 in the wake of the National Movement. From its humble beginning 70 years ago SVKM today has grown into a big educational complex imparting high-level education to more than 32,000 students. Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), as a part of its own Silver Jubilee Celebration, started the Mithibai College of Arts & Mohanlal Dayal Chauhan Institute Of Science in 1961. Amrutben Jivanlal College of Commerce and Economics was an addition in the year 1980; and a complex was thereby formed that embraced the three main streams of education-Arts, Science and Commerce. Need based, career oriented, self financing courses like Bachelor of Management Studies(B.M.S.), B.Sc. & M.Sc. degree courses in Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Computer Science have been introduced by the College subsequently. The college is fortunate enough to have a dedicated parent body in Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal which offers every kind of assistance at every stage. The encouragement which the parent body has been giving to the Principal, staff and students is well-known. The Mandal always been having extremely capable persons at its helm. Keeping pace with the growth of the college, the Mandal has generously invested in expanding the infrastructural facilities like extension of floors on the existing main building, well furnished laboratories, construction of fully air-conditioned annex building. In the midst of the thickly populated suburbs of Mumbai, the students and the staff are provided with a relatively pollution free atmosphere, conducive for studying, as also good canteen facilities and pure and clean water. Mithibai College is affiliated to the University of Mumbai . The college, Degree and Junior taken together has around 9600 students, 257 teaching staff and 170 non-teaching staff. In spite of the phenomenal growth in the number of students, the standard of discipline has been very well maintained and the student-teacher relations are absolutely cordial. The college situated in Vile Parle with state of the art amenities, ever expanding facilities and an unparalleled infrastructure provides personal counseling to all its students. The college library, with its vast and eclectic collection of books and journals, quenches the thirst for knowledge of both staff and students. Many of the students have excelled in their examinations and have secured ranks among the First Ten in the University. The college has provided many top executives to the reputed business houses including multinational companies in India and abroad. Many of the students have been successful industrialists, academicians, sports persons and famous film & theater personalities. Students are also helpful in their placements in the industries. The college gives utmost attention to the overall development of the personality of students and it has initiated Honours Programme in the Degree College and in-house CET guidance programme in the junior college for the benefit of the students. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular, extra-curricular activities and sports. While thus always ensuring academic and co-curricular facilities to a vibrant student community, the college has always been conscious of its role as a constructive and responsible component of the larger society.[2] Mithibai College-an epitome of progressively widening horizon to thousands of alumni, ensures academic and co-curricular facilities to a vibrant student community. Its consistent and unstinting efforts in this direction are borne out by the fact that students enter the college, young, immature, uncertain, bewildered, but leave its portals still young, but much more mature, self-confident and focused, ready to lead rich lives of their own even while enriching that of the society.[3] [edit] Honours Programme (Degree College)It has been observed that there are lots of limitations in the University affiliated system since there is no timely update in the curriculum which is of utmost importance as the world is progressing at a much higher rate and knowledge is expanding exponentially. There is a creation of a huge gap between what the college is catering to the students under University system and what industry/job market needs from their recruits. In this context the college has initiated HONOURS PROGRAM, which is not only supplementary to academics but also involves industry oriented and industry exposure to the undergraduate and post-graduate students. In addition, it also incorporates some common programs such as personality development, presentation skills, communication skills, entrepreneurs skills, stress management and training candidates for better performance at the interviews. Under this program the students enrolled are requested to successfully complete 180 credits in their three year degree course by opting for various modules.[4] honoring miss india world 2008 and miss world 1st runner up 2008 miss parvathy omanakuttan and miss neha dalvi the college bride, upcoming actress and participating in miss india and miss world in coming year were honoured by all svkm colleges. [edit] In-house CET Guidance Programme (Junior College)After introduction of MHT-CET (Maharashtra Health-Technical Common Entrance Test) by the Government of Maharashtra, the HSC Science students have shifted their focus from the regular examinations to the CETs. As a result, the attendance of students in the classrooms has substantially declined, particularly after the month of December. The majority of students aspired to take CET coaching by spending huge amounts. There is no provision for preparing the HSC students for CETs in the Board’s curriculum or junior college programme. Whereas the inclination of students to turn to provide coaching classes is understandable, it is also necessary to provide them with proper orientation, necessary skills and practice of solving application-based MCQs(Multiple Choice Questions) to enable them to successfully take the CETs. As a part of its endeavours to add quality to its various programmes, the college decided to provide support to the HSC Science students studying in the college, in preparing themselves for MHT-CETs, AIEEE and other such tests. MHT-CETs require altogether a different approach and hence stress is given on the proper orientation of students along with the training so that they can pass the CET examination with flying colours. MHT-CET Guidance Pogramme includes chapter-wise teaching orientation of the students followed by the MCQ tests and then briefing sessions so as to know where students make common mistakes and how they can improve upon the same. Usually, the lectures of In-house CET in the college begins in the month of January in FYJC(First Year Junior College) Science. The coordinator of the programme is Mr. Mayur Mehta of the Department of Chemistry of Mithibai. From the month of September-October, regular tests are taken 4 times a week if Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology is taken and 3 tests is Maths, Chemistry and Physics is only taken. Students who cannot not joined the programme earlier can join during that time for rigorous test practice.
