The Mississippi Surge is a team in the Southern Professional Hockey League set to begin play for the 2009-10 season. Based in Biloxi, home games will be played at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, previously home to the ECHL's Mississippi Sea Wolves from 1996 until their suspension of operations in 2009. [1]

The team held a name-the-team contest on their temporary webpage. On June 17, the Surge unveiled their name, logo, and colors. [2].

The naming of the team was not without controversy, as it evokes the image of the 28-foot storm surge of Hurricane Katrina that destroyed the beachfront of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Many fans disapprove of the team's name because of the reference to the storm, and disapprove of the logo because of its amateurish look and the use of blue and gold as the team's colors, which were the long-time colors of a rival hockey team in Pensacola, Florida.

The team is expected to resume the rivalry between the Sea Wolves and the new Louisiana IceGators that existed when both teams played in the ECHL. The team opened their inaugural season against the IceGators on October 22, 2009 in Blackham Coliseum.
