Mir Ibrahim Rahman CEO, GEO TV NETWORK
The scion of Pakistan's most prominent media family, Jang Group, Mir had an early exposure to media. He graduated Suma Cum Laude with Honors from Babson College in Economics, Finance and Entrepreneurship in 2000 and is one of the youngest CEOs to head a channel. His leadership has been proclaimed by National Association of Broadcaster's International Excellence Award (2004). The award, given to the channel that has had the most impact in its community, points to GEO's contribution in some of the most innovative, creative and exposing programming created in Pakistan. GEO has changed the media landscape of Pakistan (The New York Times, 2003). His project “Zara Sochieye” (Translated: Just Think!) led a wave of critics who say that the failings of a set of Islamic decrees must be addressed, and the law amended. (International Herald Tribune, 2006) The Government of Pakistan finally listened to the peoples voice and took action to make amendments to the Hudood Ordinance following the Zara Sochieye Campaign. The continuing “Zara Sochieye” campaign focused on the state of Judiciary in Pakistan and also resulted in increase of salaries for Judges and paved the way towards independent judiciary and judicial reforms in Pakistan. Under his supervision, Geo launched its first films project titled “Khuda Kay Liye” (Transalted: In the Name of God) through the Geo Films platform. The film has not only become the Pakistani film industry’s biggest blockbuster (Newsweek Web Exclusive, 2007) but has also prompted dialogue and discussion facing Islam and Pakistan today.
