Robert A. Millikan Senior High School is a high school in Long Beach, California administered by the Long Beach Unified School District. It is located near the intersection of Spring Street and Palo Verde Avenue in East Long Beach. As of the 2007-2008 school year, Millikan High School served approximately 4,474 students.

In order to earn a high school diploma, all Millikan students must:

• Complete 40 Service Learning hours.
• Attempt to pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) (optional).
• Earn 220 credits by the end of the second semester of the senior year.
• All Demerits must be cleared to be able to walk in the graduation ceremony.
• Clear all fines in order to walk in the graduation ceremony.
• Summer graduates are not eligible to participate in the graduation ceremony.

The initials of the school's namesake – Robert Andrews Millikan – spell RAM. The Ram is the school mascot. Aries, the school annual, Corydon, the school newspaper, Ram Pages, the student handbook, as well as all activity groups carry out the RAM theme.

Millikan High School is made up of seven Small Learning Communities (SLCs).

• (Questioning, Understanding, Engaging, - Success through Technology), is a GATE magnet for gifted and talented honors students. QUEST students commit to a rigorous four-year, distinguished college preparatory program that encourages diversity of thought and scholarly endeavor. The academic independence of QUEST Scholars culminates in a self-directed Senior Project. The curriculum integrates academic disciplines though a thematic, problem-based approach to learning and includes accelerated, honors, and a minimum of three Advanced Placement (AP) classes and exams. QUEST students are supported in post-secondary planning through counseling and an academic portfolio. In addition to academic studies, QUEST students are active participants in campus extra- and co-curricular activities. Entrance requirements include a GPA of 3.3 or higher, high standardized test scores, and a good record of citizenship and attendance. The lead teacher of the Quest program is currently Mrs. Abbate.

• (Community of Musicians, Performers, Artists, and Social Scientists) is a smaller learning community designed to prepare students for college by engaging them in a program that integrates core curriculum with the social sciences and the arts. The program places great emphasis on standards based instruction while helping students to connect learning with real world situations.the program is also in charge of the school's literary arts magazine, called Visions. The lead teachers of Compass are Mr. Vann and Mrs. Massich.

• Formally known as the KIUP program, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are still in KIUP. Academy is designed to provide university preparation and career exploration. Math and science enrichment geared toward the average and above average student is provided within a supportive cross-curricular program. Students graduate with both their "A-G" [1] university requirements and a personal career exploration portfolio.

• (Personal success through Empowerment, Academic achievement, Character education, and Ethics in action) is an innovative academy that engages in such programs as simulations (Contemporary World Project & International Negotiations), hands-on learning, community service, field experience, student government based upon the United States Constitution, peer/teacher mentoring, partnership with CSULB School of Philosophy, and standards based content which is cross curricular. It is second to QUEST academically. Upon graduation PEACE students will exceed UC and CSU admissions.

• Global Tech is a four year college preparatory program emphasizing computer applications and technology. The academy provides a rigorous college preparatory education that provides the necessary foundation for students to either enter college or be competitive in the world of work. Students become a member of a small learning community that is committed to integrating classroom learning with technology. Students are required to take technology classes such as Cisco Networking, Web Page Design, Architectural Design, Graphic Design and Computer Programming.

• (Scholastic Teams of English Language Learners for Academic Rigor) provides a standards-based, challenging curricula for English learners at EL Levels 1,2,3, and 4. Teams of teachers work together and with students to provide the personal and academic support of a Small Learning Community environment. After acquiring English proficiency, students transition to other Millikan academies.

• (Millikan Business Academy), formerly the Ultimate Success Academy, promotes essential life skills and college-preparedness with a particular emphasis on entrepreneurship, marketing, enterprise, and financial independence steeped in sound business practices and principles.

Under the excellent direction of computer faculty John Jacobson (B.S. Physics, M.Ed. Mathematics Education, both at UCSB) the academy has taken off and is a very solid option in the small learning communities at Millikan^{[citation needed]}.

AVID, short for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a rigorous support program for highly-motivated students that works in conjunction with the other magnet programs to prepare students for attendance at a 4-year college or university. AVID involves students with a strong group of peers and adults who share a commitment to academic achievement and who work together to help the group succeed. The AVID elective teacher fills the roles of teacher, academic coach, and mentor. AVID is an elective course of study taught within the school day, and so the teacher has regular contact with AVID students throughout the school year.

Its mission is to prepare students for college by offering rigorous academic classes and by fostering good study habits, as well as helping students navigate the college application process.

The AVID program grants special consideration to groups underrepresented in college, students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and to students who will be the first in their family to attend college

AVID is an international program, and as of June 2001, adopted by over 1,200 schools in 21 states and 14 countries.

Millikan High School has a choral program that is directed by John Harvey. The entire program is has 6 classes, Cecillian Singers 1-2 which is a freshman girls class (also called Choraleers), Varsity Chorale 1-8, a freshman boys class, Voice, a small class concentrating on solos, Cecillian Singers 3-8, an intermediate girls class, Concert Choir 1-8, which is a large, advanced, Co-Ed group of male and female vocalists. And finally Vocal Ensemble, the most prevalent class in the school that meeting 0 period, consisting of the school's top 8 male and top 10 female vocalists, with 4 basses, 4 tenors, 5 altos, and 5 sopranos.

Since 2006,The Millikan High School Vocal Ensemble takes a trip every year to San Francisco, California to compete with the best high schools, city colleges, and state colleges from the entire west coast of the country. The Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble, which are the advanced choirs are able to sight read up to 6 part choral music, pieces they have worked on in past years are, When David Heard and As Vesta Was both composed by Thomas Weelkes.Other pieces of music such as Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel? arr. by Moses Hogan.

• There are 2 concerts a year for the whole entire program which takes place in the fall and the spring.
• After the fall concert, the concert choir men and varsity chorale men mix for a special men's ensemble and perform for the Principal for a Day luncheon.
• Concert Choir performs 3 times a year, the fall concert, the holiday concert, and the spring concert.
• Concert Choir and Vocal Ensemble are often known to perform for QUEST recruitment presentations.
• Before the spring concert, the Vocal Ensemble goes on a trip to a festival in San Francisco.
• After the spring concert, the Concert Choir sings for the Most Inspiring Student Awards for the LBUSD.
• Every year on graduation day, the Concert Choir sings the Alma Mater for the graduating class.
• Once a year the co-principal, Dr. Jeff Cornejo, gives an operatic performance in the Millikan auditorium to a select group of top students.

This program is spearheaded by Ms. Wendy Atwell. They put on 3 plays a year, the fall play, the spring musical, and the spring play which is performed in the Black Box Theatre.

The fall play is performed in the school auditorium. The spring musical is open to everyone that attends Millikan and is also performed in the auditorium.

The Spring Musical is a production that is headed by Ms. Wendy Atwell, with assistance from Mr. John Harvey and Ms. Waters from the dance department, whose lead students are often distinct members of the Vocal Music program and the Drama Department. Previous performances include, Fiddler on the Roof, Cinderella, Oklahoma!, The Boys from Syracuse, with The Sound of Music, and as a possibility for 2010 Guys and Dolls

Millikan is also known for having an exceptional music programs^{[citation needed]}. The instrumental music program consists of Jazz Band, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, Marching Band, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Symphonic Orchestra. The program was once under the direction of the late Michael Pappone and Roger Johnson before they went on to teaching at LBCC and CSULB/LBCC, respectively. Each year the various music ensembles compete in festivals thought the United States. The Marching Band is a six-time tournament winner^{[citation needed]}. In recent years Millikan has traveled to compete in festivals in San Francisco, Las Vegas and Reno. In the Spring of 2006 the Symphonic Orchestra performed in a national festival at the Historic Boston Symphony Hall in Boston, Massachusetts. The Instrumental program is currently under the direction of Ms. B.

Millikan High School requires all students to wear school uniforms, which consist of white, navy, or gold, and stripes consisting of Millikan colors. Bottoms must be khaki or navy blue.

• Millikan’s soccer program for both boys and girls has consistently been rated among the best in Southern California^{[citation needed]}, earning the number 2 title in the nation for boy's soccer^{[citation needed]}.

• Millikan’s wrestling program has long been rated among the best in Southern California, having produced more than 25 league championships and numerous entries in State Championships.
