John Michael Jack (born September 17, 1946 in Folkestone, Kent, England) is a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. He has been Member of Parliament for Fylde since the 1987 election, and served at various junior ministerial posts during the John Major administration. On 14 March 2008, Jack announced he would not stand again at the next United Kingdom general election[1].

[edit] Early life

He is the son of Ralph and Florence Edith Jack. He went to Bradford Grammar School, then Bradford Technical College (now the University of Bradford). At the University of Leicester, he received a BA in Economics, and a MPhil in Transport Economics. He worked for Procter & Gamble from 1971-5. From 1975-80 he worked at Marks & Spencer being PA to the managing director Lord (Sir Derek) Rayner from 1975-6, then was Director of LO Jeffs from 1981-7 (which was part of Northern Foods).

[edit] Parliamentary career

He contested Newcastle Central in February 1974. He was a Minister at the DSS from 1990-2, at the Home Office from 1992-3, then at MAFF from 1993-5. From 1995-7, he was Financial Secretary to the Treasury. William Hague appointed him a member of his Shadow Cabinet in 1997 as Shadow Agriculture Minister, but he returned to the back-benches in 1998. He is currently Chairman of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee. He is a pro-European, and member of the Tory Reform Group.

He is Chairman of the Hartington Group (based in Newport, Shropshire). He is a non-executive Director of Topps Tiles.
