Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix bgcmp.org |
This article is about the elite social club in New York City. For the 19th century baseball team, see New York Metropolitans. The Metropolitan Club is a private social club in New York City. It was formed in 1891, by J.P. Morgan as a kind of protest against the special tendencies into which many of the clubs had been falling for the previous fifteen years. It is no longer a male-only club.[1] Along with the Knickerbocker Club and the Union Club, the Metropolitan is considered one of the bastions of old-world society.[citation needed] It is one of New York's most exclusive clubs[citation needed] and its building, located at Fifth Avenue and 60th St., is considered one of architect Stanford White's most lavish works.
