Metal Sludge logo

Metal Sludge is a glam metal, hard rock and heavy metal website founded in 1998. It has spawned various tours (known as Metal Sludge Extravaganzas) as well as an album. Male fans of the website are referred to as Sludgeaholics, while female equivalents are known as Sludgettes.

The website has been featured on VH1 and various rock music magazines in the past due to the groupie section of the website and "Penis Chart" where groupies share their sexual experiences with rockstars.

[edit] History

Metal Sludge was founded in 1998 by Stevie Rachelle front man of glam metal band Tuff and his friend Shawn Card. For much of its early years (and the years which it gained most attention), the two of them were anonymously writing on the website via pseudonyms made up of parts of 1980s glam metal and hard rock acts. Rachelle looked at their approach as similar to the Unknown Comic from the late 70s and early 80s who would wear a paper bag over his face or the Masked Magician who told the secrets of magic tricks in the late 90s.

The "characters" used most prominently were Jani Bon Neil (made up of the names Jani Lane, Jon Bon Jovi and Vince Neil), Bastard Boy Floyd (a play on the band Pretty Boy Floyd's name), Taime "Sex" Slaughter (made up of the names Taime Downe, Steve "Sex" Summers and Mark Slaughter, Donna Anderson (made up of the names Donna D'Errico and Pamela Anderson, both ex-wives of Mötley Crüe members Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee. ) and Ozzy Stillbourne (a play on the name Ozzy Osbourne). Other names used: CC Van Sixx combining CC DeVille, Eddie Van Halen and Nikki Sixx, Dana Brittingham using Dana Strum and Eric Brittingham, Blackie Z'Nuff was Blackie Lawless and Chip Z'Nuff, and Blas Dokken which is Blas Elias and Don Dokken.

Stevie Rachelle met with Hit Parader magazine editor Andy Secher in 1990 while in New York City. In response to a question about staff writers, Andy informed Rachelle at the time there were no other writers, it was all him. Stevie questioned about all the different names used for articles and reviews. Secher explained to Rachelle that he would write reviews of music while watching baseball. He would take the 1st baseman's last name: for example, Pete Rose and the Pitchers first name, for example, Rollie Fingers. He would use the name Rollie Rose as the name for the review. Many years later when putting together the plan for the website Metal Sludge, Rachelle told Card the story and they together started picking apart rock star names and Jani Bon Neil was born.

Metal Sludge's approach was antagonistic, utilizing humour, but at the same time it was in a tongue-in-cheek manner as the website did support the bands which it covered. Their first large rivalry was with Gerri Miller of Metal Edge magazine; a magazine which once covered glam metal, heavy metal music and hard rock but had since moved on to nu metal.

After 6 years, in August 2004, the pressure got to be too intense, and Stevie Rachelle came forward as running the site. This simultaneously led to a falling out between Rachelle and Card which ended in a lengthy lawsuit. During early 2007, it was rumoured that the site might close after several hacks[1]. The site has since passed its 10 year anniversary in September 2008.

[edit] Sludgeaholics & Sludgettes

In addition to the various anonymous pseudonyms, a few real live individuals emerged as Metal Sludge personalities. The first was someone dubbed Jim Bob Dwarf (inspired by the Toronto, Ontario metal band Killer Dwarfs), who first came to the attention of Metal Sludge by his participation in such events as their eBay auction and scavenger hunt. Jim Bob went on to become one of the first Sludgeaholics of the Month (later Sludgeaholic of the Year), as well as conducting a number of interviews and appearing at their live events.

Another personality to emerge from Metal Sludge is C.C. Banana. Inspired by a 2001 Metal Sludge article about Poison guitarist C. C. DeVille, the Banana has since gone on to become a comedic entertainer in his own right. C.C. Banana first came to the attention of Sludgeaholics when he stalked (and mocked) C.C. DeVille while wearing a large banana costume. Later that year, the newly-dubbed C.C. Banana again made Metal Sludge headlines when he engaged in a nightclub confrontation with longtime Sludge nemesis Sebastian Bach. Since then, C.C. Banana has gone on to conduct dozens of comedic rock star interviews, host a string of live concerts and even make a handful of TV guest appearances (including Who Wants to Be a Superhero? on the Sci Fi Channel and Talking Metal On Fuse). In 2008, C.C. Banana appeared on the Kiss tribute album "KISS MY ANKH: A Tribute To Vinnie Vincent," performing a parody of the song "Unholy" rewritten as a roast of Danger Danger vocalist Ted Poley.[2]

Other notable Sludge personalities included Evel Dick who went on to win Big Brother 8 and Static Beth who created a website showing rock stars and other famous men's penises.

Rachelle and Card worked together for all facets of the site. Card suggested a monthly pinup girl, which was then taken from the band Insane Clown Posse and their fan base being referred to as Juggalos or Jugalettes. Rachelle said the idea behind the Sludgeaholic and Sludgette was to be like Beauty and the Beast. The Sludgeaholic was to be like a roadie, heavy metal fan who may have facial hair, a beer gut and dirty torn jeans: the beast. The Sludgette was to be like a groupie, pin up looking girl: the beauty.

[edit] Merchandise and CDs

A line of T-shirts, long sleeves, hoodies, baby Dolls, hats, panties, and work shirts were launched. The slogan first used was The Few, The Proud, The Bitter which was a play on The Few, The Proud, The Marines. The next item was the Poison style t-shirt with rivets and neon green ink with the same slogan on the back. Then followed the Motley Crue style barbed wire logo tee with blood red ink, and the new slogan Sex, Sludge & Rock n' Roll. This logo was copied by former WWE wrestling champion Chris Jericho. The "Metal Slut" line was introduced in tank tops, baby dolls, and g-string panties. The logo was identical to the Metal Sludge logo only the word Sludge was substituted with the word Slut. The site also sold hoodies, work shirts, ski beanies and flex fit hats with embroidered Metal Sludge logos. The site also sold custom baseball jerseys.

The site released Hey That's What I Call Sludge Vol - 1 on CD in 2003. This was a play on the Now That's What I Call Music CD series. The CD featured 24 tracks by artists who were friendly with the website. Featured artists included: Sum 41, Lit, Metal Skool now known as Steel Panther, Bowling for Soup, Firehouse, Supersuckers, Wednesday 13, Jizzy Pearl of Love/Hate, Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot, Tuff, Billy Morris former Warrant guitarist and The Wildhearts.

[edit] The Original Gossip Board

The website forum has 30,000 registered members, with several sub-forums. In the past, various celebrities from the era have found their way onto the boards and traded blows with fans. This includes regular visitors Tracii Guns, guitarist of L.A. Guns, Skid Row guitarist Dave Sabo, Robbie Crane of Ratt, photographer Neil Zlozower and Steve Summers, lead singer of Pretty Boy Floyd.

[edit] Interviews: 20 Questions, Rewind, 3-Wind, Back 4 More, and 10 questions

The website has conducted hundreds of interviews over the years, with artists from all walks of the rock community:

Steven Adler of Guns n' Roses, Alice Cooper, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Rikki Rockett of Poison, David Coverdale of Whitesnake, Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe, Tracii Guns of LA Guns, Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society, Eric Brittingham of Cinderella, Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot, Scott Ian of Anthrax, Jani Lane of Warrant, Bruce Kulick of Kiss, Taime Downe of Faster Pussycat, Jeff Pilson of Dokken, Bobby Blotzer of Ratt, King Diamond and hardcore punk legend Henry Rollins from Black Flag.

Metal Sludge has also interviewed various members of obscure hair bands such as: Nitro, Sleez Beez, Kik Tracee, W.A.S.P., Vain, Enuff Z'nuff, Kingofthehill, Love/Hate, Pretty Boy Floyd, Helix, Y&T, Pariah, Tigertailz, Killer Dwarfs, XYZ, The Zeros, Saigon Kick, Firehouse, Danger Danger, Tuff, Wildside, Leatherwolf, Silent Rage, Loudness & Odin, and the B'zz.

Below is an example of a Metal Sludge-style question, to Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe;

24. Does it look like Brandon and Dylan have inherited any of your extraordinary talent? (Such as drumming, musicianship, large penises, wife beating, etc.)

Tommy: YOUR A DICK!!!" (sic)[3]

As well as rock and metal musicians, interviews are also conducted with pornstars like Jenna Jameson, Kendra Jade, Jasmine St. Clarie & Ron Jeremy. Also professional wrestlers Chris Jericho & The Blue Meanie and the girlfriends/former-girlfriends of rockstars such as Bobbie Brown, Donna D'Errico and Rock of Love 2 finalist Daisy De La Hoya.

The first interview is called a "20 Questions" interview, if the person interviewed returns for further ones in the future (usually spaced a couple of years apart), they are referred to as a "Rewind", "3-Wind" and "Back-4-More" respectively. There is also a interview titled "10 questions" which interviews new talented up and coming bands, and more obscure rock acts and artists of the 80's era.

Metal Sludge also exposes people who have agreed to do an interview but later backed out due to the nature of the questions or other reasons. These people are placed on the "Pussy List", which includes Sebastian Bach, Marilyn Manson and Joey Belladonna.[4] If a person has been placed on the Pussy List, but has later agreed to the interview, they are removed from the list. Phil Lewis is an example of this.
