Wing Commander Mervyn Leslie Middlecoat (death- 08, December, 1971) was a Pakistani Air Force strike pilot who was shot down during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Wing Com. Middlecoat was one of the noted pilot who fought many aerial battles during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani wars.[1] Middlecoat is credited with numerous air to air kills. He was one of the distinguished PAF strike pilot. He was stationed in Sindh Karachi where he flew the F-104 Starfighter. Mervyn L Middlecoat was one of numerous distinguished Pakistani Christian pilots.
[edit] 1965 Indo-Pakistani WarLt. Middlecoat was stationed at the PAF Masroor Airbase. The same night, Karachi was underattack by the Indian Air Force. PAF's F-86 responded the IAF jets with an agreesive defense. Lt. Middlecoat flew F-86 in which he shot down 2 IAF aircraft by killing the both pilots. He was credited of defending Karachi from the Indian Air Force. Later he was transferred at PAF Lahore where he joined Mushaf Airbase under the leadership of Gen. Turowicz. [edit] Operation Amritsar RadarOn the outbreak of war on 3rd December 71, Wing Commander Mervyn L. Middlecoat was on a training visit abroad. He returned to Pakistan immediately and joined operations with such keen interest that he inspired all squadron pilots. He was one of the 6 strike command officers who where selected to conduct aerial operation "MIssion Amritsar Radar" at Bay of bengal. The day after his arrival he was detailed on a strike mission to the heavily defended jamnagar airfield. On 4 December 1971, Squadron Leaders Amanullah and Rashid Bhatti attacked Amritsar Radar. They met with stiff resistance but managed to shoot down two aircraft, an Indian Gnat and an Su-7. The pilot of the Gnat, Flight Lieutenant J. Preira was Killed in Action. On 08 December, Flight Lieutenant Manzoor Bokhari intercepted an IAF Canberra and shot it down. On 10 December, Wing Commander Arif Iqbal, while attacking the Indian Harbour of Okha, shot down an Alize aircraft of Indian Navy. Its crew members, Lieutenant Commander Ashok Roy, Lieutenant H. S. Sirohi and A.C.O. Vijayan were killed in action. The two F-104s under the leadership of Wing Commander Mervyn Leslie Middlecoat and Flight Lieutenant Samad Changezi successfully intercepted the IAF fighter jets and shot down, killing both of its pilots. However, after completing the PAF mission, an Indian Navy's short range missiles successfully targeted the two F-104s, killing Wing Com. Middlecoat and Lt. Changezi. After the war, both pilots were awarded gallantry awards of Sitara-e-Jurat and Sitara-i-Basalat (roughly equivalent to the British Distinguished Flying Cross).[2] [edit] See also[edit] References | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
