Mehmet Ali Şahin (b. 16 September 1950 in Ekincik village of Ovacık, Karabük) is a Turkish politician and currently Speaker of the Parliament of Turkey.[1] He was member of the parliament for three terms from Istanbul Province and from Antalya Province of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). He earlier served as the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice, and the Minister of State responsible for sports.[1] Şahin is a lawyer, a graduate of Istanbul University faculty of law, and before entering the parliament, he had been involved in regional politics serving as the mayor of Fatih district in Istanbul, with Welfare Party (RP), and later with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's AKP.[1] During his term as Sports Minister, he had to deal with a situations including:
