Mehmet Ali Şahin (b. 16 September 1950 in Ekincik village of Ovacık, Karabük) is a Turkish politician and currently Speaker of the Parliament of Turkey.^[1]

He was member of the parliament for three terms from Istanbul Province and from Antalya Province of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). He earlier served as the Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Justice, and the Minister of State responsible for sports.^[1]

Şahin is a lawyer, a graduate of Istanbul University faculty of law, and before entering the parliament, he had been involved in regional politics serving as the mayor of Fatih district in Istanbul, with Welfare Party (RP), and later with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's AKP.^[1]

During his term as Sports Minister, he had to deal with a situations including:

• Allegations of corruption in the Turkish Super League,
  • The appointment of Haluk Ulusoy as its president,
• Drugtaking by weightlifters and athletes,
• A scandal involving him accepting a racehorse as a gift from the Turkish Racehorse Owners and Breeders Association.^[2]

On 5 August 2009, he was elected in third round as the 24th (27th, from the establishment) Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly succeeding his party colleague Köksal Toptan.^[1]

He is married with four children.^[1]
