Up until recently the Libyan Government owned and regulated all the local media in Libya . On 29 January 2006 Saif al-Islam Qaddafi the reforming son of Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi announced that the Libyan government is allowing private radio and television stations and printed news publications.

Saif al-Islam Qaddafi's private Media Company One Nine Media (in reference to the date of the Libyan revolution 01/09/1969) launched a Radio Station Allibya FM in 2006 to be the first privately owned media broadcasting station in Libya.

One Nine Media also signed a multi-million contract with German company Heidelberg , to construct a printing house which will publish "uncensored" foreign publications like Newsweek and Der Spiegel.
