Career highlights

Matthew Spangher (born 23 April 1987) is an Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League.

He was recruited as the number 34 draft pick in the 2005 AFL Draft from Eastern Rangers. He is a mobile tall defender with very good endurance (his 10.23sec for the 3 km time trial at the 2005 draft camp was in the top 8% of the cohort). He has been likened in playing style by some to Geelong defender, Matthew Scarlett. In 2006, he only played one WAFL reserves game for East Fremantle, before sustaining a groin injury which kept him out for the rest of the season.

In 2007, he had a very good season for East Fremantle in the WAFL, playing as a mobile key defender. His performance of the season came against Subiaco, where he restricted Subiaco star full forward Brad Smith (the WAFL's leading goalkicker for 2007, kicking 126 goals) to just 2 goals, helping East Fremantle to a 59 point victory over Subiaco (eventual 2007 premiers).

In the 2008 pre-season, Spangher had been earmarked for assuming the centre half back position for West Coast in the future. After his excellent WAFL performances in the first 3 rounds of 2008 (where he restricted Ryan Murphy and Brad Smith), he made a solid AFL debut in the round 4, 62 point loss to Sydney at ANZ Stadium, picking up 12 disposals and 7 marks.

Matthew Spangher attended Xavier College in Melbourne, Victoria.
