Matthew Katz is a music manager and producer, most notable as the former manager of Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape[1] and It's A Beautiful Day. His relationships with all three bands ended acrimoniously and led to protracted litigation well into the 1980's. Members of Moby Grape were still being sued by Katz as recently as 2007. One of his court actions was as a complainant in the 2001 litigation against Napster.[2] Another was in relation to the 2005 and 2006 California court decisions by which the members of Moby Grape regained ownership of the band name.[3]

Katz is also the owner of San Francisco Sound Records, which has released original or licensed material by Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, It's A Beautiful Day and Tim Hardin, among others.[4] Its releases are distributed through San Francisco Sound, which is particularly notable for having released Unforgiven (1981), the last recordings of Tim Hardin. This is the album Tim Hardin was recording in 1980, but failed to complete, due to his death from an overdose of heroin.[5]
