He received his first recall to Ottawa in the 2008–09 season on January 7, 2009.[2] Carkner made his Senators debut in a 6-4 loss against the Boston Bruins on January 8, 2009.[3] On September 29, 2009, the Ottawa Senators announced that Carkner had made the team's roster and would start the 2009-10 season in Ottawa[4]. On October 8th, 2009, during the Senators' home opener vs the New York Islanders, Carkner scored his first career NHL goal on Islanders' goalie Martin Biron. The Ottawa crowd gave a standing ovation to Carkner, whose hometown of Winchester is just half an hour away from Ottawa.
