Matías Jesús Almeyda (born 21 December 1973 in Azul) is an Argentine football player, who plays for River Plate.
[edit] Biography[edit] Club careerAlmeyda has played for several clubs, including River Plate, Lazio, Parma and Inter Milan. He spent three seasons in Rome, becoming a firm fan favourite, especially after scoring a 35-yard goal against Gianluigi Buffon[1], helping them to the league and cup Double in 2000 as well as European Cup Winners' Cup the previous year.[2] Almeyda was voted Serie A best player of the 1997-98 season. In summer 2002, Almeyda was exchanged with Vratislav Gresko. Almeyda joined Brescia on free transfer in summer 2004.[3] The following year, he returned to Argentina and agreed to play for Quilmes in Copa Libertadores. He announced his retirement after the team's elimination from that tournament. After one and a half years away from football, in which he represented Argentina in a Showball tour around the world alongside Diego Maradona and participated in the Indoor Football World Cup in Spain, Almeyda decided to get back into the game. 26 March, 2007, he signed for the Norwegian Premiership club Lyn, and made his début 13 May, coming on as a substitute. Almeyda played regularly on the reserve team and in the Norwegian Cup, but was only fielded in one more league game, again as a substitute. 26 May 2007, Almeyda reached a mutual agreement with Lyn and the contract was terminated. On 19 February 2009 the former Argentina international returned to football after retiring in May 2007. Almeyda signed for Argentine third division club Fenix. [4] Moreover, in an interview with Italian radio station Radio Incontro, he half-jokingly stated that he would relish a return to Lazio, where he played from 1997 to 2000. [5] On 19 August 2009, it was reported that Almeyda had signed with River Plate, joining well known River Plate veterans and former national team teammates Marcelo Gallardo and Ariel Ortega. After 13 years of playing football abroad and a period in retirement, he returned to play for his first and favorite club which he played in from 1991 to 1996. [6] [edit] International careerHe has played for the Argentine national football team and was a participant at the 1996 Olympic Games, and the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups. [edit] BackgroundDue to his copious and thick hair, he's ironically nicknamed El Pelado ("The Baldy"). [edit] Honours
