Prof. Dr. Mohammad Masud Ahmad or (Masood Ahmed) is a Pakistani theoretical physicist, specializing in elementary particle physics and Statistical physics, dr. Ahmad is considered one of the top pioneer of the Pakistan's nuclear program. He also served as an executive member of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan. Ahmad is also a distinguished student of famous Pakistani theoretical physicist, dr. Riazuddin. He also specialized in theoretical physics under the supervision of dr. Abdus Salam. Dr. Ahmad played a pivotal role in establishing of Riazuddin National Center for Physics. Currently, he is working as a theoretical physicist at the PAEC. He also been a visiting professor of the theoretical Physics at the Quaid-i-Azam University. He is currently serving as PINSTECH's director from 2002 to date.
[edit] Life and EducationAhmad received his intermediate level education from Lahore. He attended Punjab University where he graduated and received Ph.D under the supervision of Dr. Riazuddin. Later, he went to United Kingdom and attended Imperial College London, where he specialized in theoretical physics under the Dr. Abdus Salam. He also received D.Sc. in theoretical physics under the supervision of Dr. Abdus Salam. He then came back to Pakistan and worked under dr. Faheem Hussain at the Institute of Physics at the Qau. [edit] ICTP and PAEC CareerIn 1970, he joined International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), where he worked there as a research scientist. He produced numerous papers in the field of theoretical physics. Dr. Masud Ahmad joined PAEC with dr. Riazuddin in 1972 on the request of their mentor dr. Abdus Salam. [edit] Project-706He, along with dr. Raziuddin Siddiqui and dr. Riazuddin formed the Theoretical Physics Group (TPG) in PAEC, which was mandated to develop the theoretical designs of Pakistan's nuclear weapons. In 1977, both TPG scientists completed the design of a nuclear bomb. In 1980-1982, the work on the bomb was completed by PAEC. Under the leadership of PAEC Chairman Munir Ahmad Khan, the TPG's theoretical designed bomb was successfully cold tested in 1983. Since then he has been staying at PAEC as a theoretical physicist. It was Ahmad's indigenously theroretically designed nuclear devices that Pakistan under Munir Ahmad Khan tested several cold tests in between 1983-1993. [edit] Support for Peaceful use of Nuclear EnergyHe has assisted PAEC Chairman Parvez Butt to reach an civilian nuclear technology agree with IAEA. In an honorary conference along with PAEC Chairman Parvez Butt and IAEA's delegation, dr. Masud Ahmad Said: "There is an urgent need to disseminate related information on radioisotope based analytical techniques to end user institutions engaged in mitigation of marine pollution. The unplanned disposal of untreated industrial, domestic and agricultural wastes into seawater has led to contamination of the coastal areas of many developing countries in South Asia resulting into considerable increase in the concentration of toxic elements. He also included that "these toxic elements have posed a threat to the marine life occasionally witnessed in the form of mass mortality of fish. Dangers to the sealife are a health and economic threat to humans who consume them as food." In the end, Ahmad concluded that "that PAEC is a pioneer organisation in the peaceful uses of radiation and radioisotope techniques in the country in the field of life sciences, hydrology, agriculture and industry and it has acquired significant expertise and infrastructure in the field of environmental isotope ecology".
