[edit] PopulationAccording to information of the Department of Statistics of Georgia the population of the city was 20,100 in 2006. The city is predominantly populated by ethnic Azerbaijanis (83,1%). Marneuli is home to one of the Caucasus's most important Mujtahids[1] and a new university at which teachers are trained for Georgia's 124 Azerbaijani-speaking schools[2]. [edit] HistoryBefore 1947 the town was known as Borchali. Prior to 1736 Borchali had been an independent sultanate and was renowned for the quality of its carpets. Between 1947 and 1952 the town was known as Sarvan, a name still used in some contexts[3]. Marneuli town gained the official status of 'city' (gorod) in 1964. Today Marneuli is the site of a Georgian military air base. That base was bombed on August 8th, 2008 during the War in South Ossetia (2008), reportedly leaving 4 dead (all ethnic Georgians)[4] and 5 wounded.[5] [edit] Map showing Marneuli[edit] References
