Dr. Mark B. Rosenberg is the president of Florida International University and former Chancellor of the State University System of Florida. He was first appointed as chancellor in November 2005, following the passage of an amendment to the Constitution of the State of Florida that mandated the creation of a new governance system for Florida's public universities. In November 2008 he announced that he would retire and return to Florida International University. Prior to being named Chancellor, Rosenberg served as Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florida International University. He also served as a professor, center director, dean and vice provost. Recognized as one of the most experienced chief executives in higher education in the country, Rosenberg is also a noted expert in Latin American Affairs. [edit] Chancellor of The State University System of FloridaRosenberg led a system of eleven public universities, serving more than 300,000 students (as of 2008), and a budget of nearly $8.5 Billion. As the chancellor, Rosenberg worked directly with the Florida Board of Governors to set the strategic direction of the State University System of Florida and led the strategic execution of "Forward By Design," the Board's long-range plan. His top priority was to ensure excellence in the State University System and to assure that Florida's universities were appropriately funded. [edit] BackgroundRosenberg is a member of the Florida Council of 100 and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. He served previously on the Council on Foreign Relations and as a consultant for the U.S. Department of State. In addition, Rosenberg served as Vice-Chancellor of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. He is a graduate of Miami University (Oxford, Ohio), where he was Phi Beta Kappa and Omicron Delta Kappa. Rosenberg received his doctorate in political science and a graduate certificate in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author and co-editor of seven books and a number of scholarly articles. His most recent book, United States and Central America: Geopolitical Realities and Regional Fragility, is a Harvard University project, co-authored with Luis Guillermo Solis of Costa Rica.
