Maris Stella High School (Chinese: 新加坡海星中学, Abbreviation: MSHS) is an autonomous, SAP, Government-aided, all-boys Catholic secondary and primary school run by the international Marist Brothers at Mount Vernon Road in Singapore. It has been headed by the principal, Bro. Anthony Tan, since 1984. Mr Lim Choon Kiat Joseph, Vice Principal of Maris Stella High School, is set to replace Brother Anthony on 29 December 2009[1]. It is placed in Band 4 in the 2009 School Achievement Table for Special/Express Course[2] compiled by the Ministry of Education and, on that basis, is considered to be one of the top 30 schools in Singapore. Its teachers and students are also involved in non-academic fields including uniformed groups, sports such as archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, softball, and table tennis, and information technology, life sciences and Chinese debate.
[edit] School crest
The international crest of the Marist Brothers is the A.M. Monogram - the Marist "M”. It is fairly certain that the monogram was devised in the honour of Our Lady long before the Marist Brothers came into being in 1817. The letters probably signify Ave Maria (Hail Mary) and the twelve stars over the monogram were derived from Chapter 12 of the Book of Apocalypse: "And a great sign appeared in Heaven; a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet, and upon her head crown of twelve stars." Most Marist schools throughout the world use the same A.M. Monogram and stars. [edit] History
Reverend Brother J. Chanel founded Maris Stella in 1958 in response to the overwhelming applications for admission to the Catholic High School which was ran by the Marist Brothers. The school started with four Primary One classes (163 pupils) and four Secondary One classes (124 pupils) and a staff of eleven including the Principal, the school's founder Bro. Chanel. Classes were held in the afternoon at another school (St. Stephen’s Primary School) after its lesson ended. Soon the school expanded and more classrooms were needed. As St. Stephen's Primary School could no longer accommodate the growing student population, Maris Stella functioned at different premises concurrently from 1963 to 1966. Among them were Silat Road Government Integrated Primary School, St. Patrick’s School, Opera Estate Convent, Tung Ling English School, and Jalan Kembangan Integrated Primary School. This caused numerous problems as the premises used were miles apart. In 1967, after nine years without a proper building, the school acquired its own premises with fifteen classrooms and a four-storey science block at Mount Vernon Road. 1968 saw the completion of the second phase, an adjoining block consisting of the Lee Kuo Chuan Hall, a canteen, a library and administration offices. With the completion of the second phase, Bro. Chanel proceeded with the next project, a five-storey building for the primary section. This marked the third phase of Bro. Chanel's development plan for the school, however, it was not until the end of 1974 that he was granted permission to launch the project. The building was completed in October 1975 at a cost of about $1.1 million. The building was declared open on 11 September 1976. With the demand for more places in the primary school, a need arose for a separate primary building which was built adjacent to the present school building. A piece of land of 3.11 hectares was acquired in 1982. The primary school has functioned on its present premises since 1987. Since 1997, the primary school has functioned as a single-session school. Between 1994 and 1996, the secondary school building was upgraded. Two years were spent at the former (now-defunct) Mount Vernon Secondary School building, and in 1997 the school moved to its present location. The upgrading exercise added new classrooms, science laboratories, art rooms, home economics rooms and technical workshops to the secondary school building. Construction of a building which integrated IT Labs and a library started in 1998 and was completed in July 1999. It houses a two-storey library, a grandstand overlooking a multi-purpose (outdoor) games court, an indoor gymnasium, a rifle range and a tennis court. It was later named the Chanel Learning Center in honour of the founder. An artificial rock-wall was built later in the same year. In 2001, the school was designated the N4 Cluster Life Sciences Hub, the "fourth pillar" of the Singapore economy. In 2005, the school was designated the IT Center of Excellence for the N4 Cluster schools. [edit] Alumni
Athletes
Several Roman Catholic priests in Singapore have graduated from Maris Stella, including Father Henry Siew. There are also former students at the Seminary. [edit] Hiphopthon 2007
As part of the school's Youth Day celebrations, the school organised Hiphopthon on 30 June 2007 in an attempt to set a new Singapore Record for the most number of people dancing hiphop at the same time. The Hiphopthon was held at Serangoon Junior College Sports Field and the event was adjudicated by the Singapore Book of Records. 1,435 Marists and teachers took part in the event and the attempt was successful. Maris Stella now holds the record for the most number of people dancing hiphop at the same time. [edit] References
