[edit] History
In the late 1960s, Marcellin flirted with a co-educational campus, when year 12 students from Our Lady of Mercy College in Heidelberg attended the Marcellin campus for some subjects. This attempt was not deemed successful. Recently, the bond between Marcellin and OLMC strengthened through their school musical production, held in 2006. Marcellin has also had close ties with Our Lady of Sion College working together on Biannual Musical productions during the 90s and early 00s as well as sharing Food Technology and Visual communication and design facilities. The College was founded upon the principles of Saint Marcellin Champagnat to provide an education grounded in Gospel values with emphasis upon each student striving to reach his potential. Indeed, the College's Latin motto: virtute ad altissima means literally "to the highest with virtue" or “Through virtue and courage to strive for the highest”. The College philosophy promotes 'open entry' in terms of academic ability, encouraging students of all abilities to undertake their studies there. This is continued into the VCE where the majority of students are encouraged to complete their Year 12. The mainstream curriculum is augmented by extension programmes for the gifted and additional support for those with learning difficulties. The College's facilities include specialist classrooms, learning technologies, performance venues and sporting venues. The 15 hectare property includes the playing fields used in the Associated Grammar Schools’ of Victoria competition, various Old Collegians' Sporting Clubs and also a few of the AFL Football Teams. Prior to the 2006 Commonwealth Games, the Fijian and Welsh rugby teams also used the Gartner Fields as an official training venue. The Jonathon Bray oval is also situated on school grounds. In April 2009, Mark Murphy took over as Principal of Marcellin College, in the place of outgoing Principal Mark Merry. Murphy formerly served as Deputy Principal of St. Joseph's College, Ferntree Gully [edit] Ethos and culture[edit] Leadership programmeThere is an established Student Representative Council which allows students to be actively involved in various College matters to help organise functions and events relative to their student body. There is a SRC representative in each year level for each house for years 7 to 11. In year 12 there is a College Captain and two Vice Captains as well as House Captains and Vice Captains for their representative houses, who form the SRC Executive Committee. 2008 saw the introduction of various Academic Captains including LOTE and various Performing Arts Captains. This was also the year for the first World Youth Day Captain in conjunction with the World Youth Day event held in the same year with the position being called the Liturgy Captain for future years.
