Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, a Grand Daughter University of University of Madras and the daughter University of Madurai Kamaraj University, was born in September 9, 1990 and declared open by the present Chief Minister Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi at an illustrious function marking the grand occasion. The motto of the University is "Knowledge is Power". Named after the famous poet - litterateur Prof. Sundaram Pillai, the University has 26 University departments on various frontier areas of Arts, Languages, Sciences, Engineering and Technology and a strong network of 102 affiliated colleges spread over the three southern districts of Tamil Nadu, namely, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. It has a sprawling 520 acres (2.1 km2) main campus located at Abishekapatti, Tirunelveli where majority of the university departments function, an aesthetic 120 acres (0.49 km2) campus housing the prestigious Sri Parama Kalyani Centre for Environmental Sciences department at Alwarkurichi and a 70 acres (280,000 m2) beautiful campus at Rajakkamangalam housing the Centre for Marine Sciences and Technology. Many of these colleges have contributed significantly to the cause of higher education for many decades. There are five colleges, which are more than 100 years old.

B.Sc. Candidates: A pass with minimum eligibility marks in any recognized Bachelors Degree in Science of minimum 3 years duration with 10+2+3 pattern with Mathematics as one of the subjects at the Degree level. Eco-friendly ventures in aquaculture, fishing and agro inputs are encouraged. The centre has developed an organic manure, Mano compost. There is a Marine research Centre at Rajakkamangalam called Center for Marine Sciences and Technology. Candidates should have passed 2 year PG Course after 3 year Bachelor Degree course and Higher Secondary Course of 2 year duration after 10 year S.S.L.C. or 1 year Pre-Degree after 11 year S.S.L.C. Candidates who have passed the PG degree examination with less than 17 years of total duration of study are not eligible for admission to M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes. Candidates with Open University qualification are not eligible for admission to Research programmes. Eligibility for M.Phil. M.Phil Application [edit] Course of StudyBoth the M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes have two parts viz. Part I and II as detailed below: Part I: The Part I of the Research programme shall comprise the following three theory papers: i. Research Methodology ii. General Paper iii. Special paper The Part I examinations shall be conducted during July and February every year. Candidates registered for Full-Time programme shall take the examinations, after six months of their registration to the respective research programme while those registered for the Part-Time Programme shall take the examinations after twelve months of registration. Part II : Thesis / Dissertation Each candidate shall be required to choose a research problem in his/her chosen area of research specialization and submit a thesis / dissertation incorporating the results of his/her investigation carried out under the supervision of a recognised supervisor. [edit] Selection ProcedureThe candidates will be selected for admission to the research programme, based on their academic performance and performance in a personal interview conducted to assess the aptitude of the candidate for research and his / her academic competence and subject to satisfying the eligibility conditions. The candidates selected for admission to the M.Phil. / Ph.D. programmes in the University Departments shall be required to submit the original transfer certificate and conduct certificate, issued by the Institution last studied, statements of marks and Provisional / Degree Certificates of Post Graduate and or M.Phil. Degree Courses. The certificates once surrendered will not be returned to the candidates till the completion of the research programme. Hence, the candidates are advised to retain with them sufficient number of attested photocopies of the certificates, before surrendering the originals. [edit] Scholarship / FellowshipsA number of scholarships are available for BC, MBC, SC/ST candidates admitted to the M.Phil / Ph.D. full time programmes in the University Departments. A number of fellowships like University Research Fellowships, Fellowships offered by the University Grants Commission, Council for scientific and industrial research and Junior Research Fellowships and Senior Research Fellowships are available to the students admitted to the Ph.D. full-time programmes in the University Departments.
