Although the Nationalist Party (Partit Nazzjonalista) gained 51.8% of the votes, the use of Single Transferable Vote in constituencies led to Malta Labour Party (Partit Laburista) winning the majority of seats and governing the Maltese Islands till the general election of 1987. This provoked a constitutional crisis, with the PN boycotting parliament. The resulting compromise allowed for the possibility of bonus seats to prevent a repeat of this position, used in 1987, 1996 and 2008.[1]
