Mahaneh Yehuda Market (Hebrew: שוק מחנה יהודה, Shuk Mahaneh Yehuda), often referred to as the 'Shuk', is an outdoor marketplace in Jerusalem, Israel. Mahaneh Yehuda market is located between Jaffa Road and Agrippas Street.[1] Apart from fresh fruits and vegetables, one can purchase baked goods, fish, meat, prepared food, spices, clothing and shoes, housewares, textiles and even Judaica.[2] On Thursdays and Fridays, the marketplace is bustling with shoppers stocking up for Shabbat.[3]
[edit] HistoryMahaneh Yehuda dates back to the end of the 19th century, when it was established on an empty lot owned by the Sephardi Valero family. Arab merchants sold goods to residents outside the Old City, saving them the long walk to the Old City food markets. Eventually, Jewish merchants opened stalls there. In the 1920s and 30s, the market was turned into a permanent facility by the British mandatory government. New stalls and food stands opened during the 1940s. [4] [edit] TransportationA new railway station, on the first line of the Jerusalem Light Rail was built on Jaffa Road, at a location adjacent to the market. Rail service will commence at the end of 2010.[citation needed] [edit] Notable residentsThe first generation of the Banai family of actors and musicians, originally lived at 1 HaAgas Street at the south end of the market. The street was renamed by the Jerusalem Municipality Eliyahu Yaakov Banai Street, after their father in 2000. Ehud Banai, one of the family members wrote a song entitled 1 HaAgas Street, which describes the life and atmosphere at the family home[5] [edit] Terrorist attacks
