Prof. Dr. M. Qasim Jan is the renowned geologist and research scientist from Pakistan. He is vice-chancellor of Quaid-i-Azam University. He has been the vice-chancellor of three Pakistani universities. Dr. Jan is a keen researcher in the field of Geology, mineralogy-petrology. He is an eminent educationist of Pakistan. He has edited various books and published numerous papers on geology and tectonics of North-West Himalaya. Currently, he is serving as the professor of geology at the Qau.
[edit] Life and EducationJan was born in Hangu in 1944 in British India. He received his elementary and secondary education from there. In 1960, M. Qasim Jan attended University of Peshawar, majoring in geology. In 1964, he received his B.Sc with honors in geology. He became a lecturer at the University of Peshawar. The same year, he went to United States with a scholarship where he attended University of Oregon. He continued his research in geology. He received his M.S. from University of Oregon in 1967. In 1968, he become a visiting professor at there. By the year of 1970, he was promoted to assistant professor at the university. Later he went to United Kingdom to pursue his Ph.D, where Jan attended University of London. In 1977, he was awarded a Ph.D in geology. After his Ph.D, he joined University of London as an associate professor where he stayed there till 1979[1]. [edit] Academic Career in United States and PakistanHe went back to United States where he joined University of Oregon as a full professor. During his stayed in the United States, he was awarded prestigious fellowships such as Royal Society, Fulbright fellowship, and NERC etc. He paid visits to many institutions and delivered talks on the geology of North West Himalayas in Europe, USA, and Asia particularly Pakistan. In 1988, he left United States and joined newly founded government based organization, National Centre of Excellence in Geology where he served as its director. He was a visiting Professor at the University of Oregon, USA, in 1994-95. From 1997 to 2000, he worked as Vice Chancellor, University of Peshawar, and July 1, 2001 to 2003, as founder Vice Chancellor of the Sarhad University of Science and Information Technology, Peshawar. In February 2004, he was selected as Distinguished National Professor of the Higher Education Commission, and has been Vice Chancellor of the Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, since October 2005 [2].
