They are a Class High-A team in the Carolina League, and currently are a farm team of the Cincinnati Reds. They had been a farm team of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1995. The Hillcats play home games at Calvin Falwell Field; refurbished and renamed in 2004, the stadium seats 2,000 fans. The Hillcats are the Carolina League's current defending champions, having swept the Salem Red Sox three games to none in the league championship series.
