The Lydian dominant scale, or Lydian ♭7 scale,[1][2] is a synthetic scale which, starting on C, runs C D E F♯ G A B♭ C. Its name refers to the presence of an augmented fourth as in the Lydian mode (C D E F♯ G A B C) and a minor seventh as in the dominant 7th chord (C E G B♭). It is the 4th mode of the ascending melodic minor scale, and is also known as the acoustic scale or the "Overtone scale".[3] The scale is frequently used in jazz and sometimes blues to "colour" dominant 7th chords to the effect of a 7#11 chord, particularly on the V chord. It is one of the more popular modes of the Melodic Minor. [edit] Sources
