The Lukovit Treasure (Bulgarian: Луковитско съкровище) is a silver Thracian treasure found in 1953 near the town of Lukovit, Lovech Province, north-western Bulgaria. The treasure consists of three small pitchers, nine phials and a large number of silver appliques, decorated with animal motifs and figures of horsemen. The objects are made of silver but some of the applications are curved with gold. They give the scientists precious information for the life and customs of the ancient Thracians and proves the rich artistic life in northern Thrace. The Lukovit Treasure is dated from 4th century BC and was made by different craftsmen. It was most probably buried in the ground during the Alexander the Great's invasion of the north-western Thracian lands. [edit] References |
