Lufthansa Cargo is the cargo airline subsidiary of Lufthansa with its own ICAO code, and callsign, unlike most other "cargo divisions" of airline holding companies and their operations across the world. Lufthansa Cargo, headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany,[1] and though considered a completely separate airline, still carries the (LH) IATA code of Lufthansa. It is an international air freight and logistics company operating worldwide services. Its main base is Frankfurt Airport. The operation in Leipzig/Halle Airport, in the eastern part of Germany, is for DHL, the German express carrier. Lufthansa Cargo does not only offer space on its own freighters, but also has access to the freight capacities of more than 300 Lufthansa passenger aircraft.
[edit] HistoryThe decision was made in July 1994 to make the freight division of Lufthansa a limited stock company. It was the first airline in the world to split cargo and passenger operations in this way. These activities were merged into the "old" German Cargo Services Ltd. (resp. Lufthansa Cargo Airlines Ltd.), renamed to Lufthansa Cargo AG (LCAG) and entered into in November 1994. For quite some time LCAG was the number one intercontinental cargo carrier but was passed meanwhile by Korean Airlines Cargo and Air France/KLM Cargo. As LCAG is famous for its innovation spirit, this is also reflected in several interesting joint ventures and subsidiaries, forming the "Lufthansa Cargo Group" which enables LH Cargo to offer the worlds biggest and best premium quality airfreight network. In 1998 its United States offices, which also served Canada and Mexico, were in Atlanta.[2] In 2004, Lufthansa Cargo and DHL Express came together in a 50:50 joint venture to create a new cargo airline. The airline AeroLogic was founded in September 2007 and intends to operate up to 11 Boeing 777Fs by 2012.[3] The airline will be based at DHL's base in Leipzig and as a result Lufthansa Cargo's MD-11s based at Leipzig will be relocated back to Frankfurt. In the Lufthansa cargo hub dispute, Russia banned Lufthansa and demanded Lufthansa to relocate its Asian cargo hub from Kazakhstan to Russia. Lufthansa was forced to agreed.
