Luc Vinet (born April 16, 1953) is a Canadian physicist and the current rector of the Université de Montréal.
[edit] BiographyVinet holds a doctorate in theoretical physics from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie and a doctorate in theoretical physics from the Université de Montréal. He began his career as a professor in the physics department of Université de Montréal in the early 1980s, carrying out mathematical research in theoretical physics pertaining to such fields of study as capacity theory, supersymmetry, quantum algebra, special functions, integratable systems and combinatory algebra. He is the author or co-author of nine books and more than one hundred scientific papers. At the Université de Montréal, Dr. Vinet distinguished himself as, among other things, director of the Centre de recherches mathématiques ("Centre for Research in Mathematics", abbreviated CRM) from 1993 to 1999, one of the most memorable periods in the history of mathematical science in Canada. He took part in the creation of MITACS ("Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems") in collaboration with the Fields Institute of Toronto and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS). During his term as director, the CRM succeeded in rallying the forces of quantitative research by forming an association of seven major Montreal research centers (CERCA, CIRANO, CRIM, CRM, CRI, GERAD and INRS–Télécom) under the banner of the Réseau de calcul et de modélisation mathématique ("Calculation and Mathematical Modeling Network" or RCM 2). The research network provides "one-stop" access to expertise calculation and modeling for more than 20 partner enterprises. While president of the RCM 2 from 1996 to 1999, Vinet was at the founding of two important research initiatives: the Bell Emergis University Laboratory, of which he was the first president and CEO, and the Réseau québécois de calcul de haute performance ("Quebec Network for High Performance Calculation" or RQCHP), for which he presented the initial request for financing to the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. Vinet is also one of the founding members of the Réseau de centres d’excellence sur les mathématiques des technologies de l’information et des systèmes complexes ("Centre for Excellence in Information Technologies and Complex Systems Mathematics"). In 1999, Luc Vinet joined the ranks of McGill University where he held, in succession, the position of vice-principal (Academic), vice-principal (University Affairs) and provost. As part of his duties at McGill, he supervised the development of campus infrastructures and developed an ambitious renewal scheme for teaching staff. It was at his initiative that the Government of Quebec and Quebec universities set up the Génome Québec organization. Vinet sits on or has sat on the boards of many organizations, including the Institut de finance mathématique de Montréal, the Canadian Institute for Telecommunications Research and the Ouranos Consortium. He has also participated in the research of a number of committees within organizations, among them Montréal International, the Chambre de commerce de Montréal, the Conférence des recteurs et des principaux des universités du Québec and the Association of American Universities. Honorary member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, he is also member of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society, the Canadian Association of Physicists, the Canadian Mathematical Society, the American Physical Society, the American Mathematical Society, the Association mathématique du Québec and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
