[edit] Basketball

The Lions burst onto the national basketball scene in under coach Paul Westhead. He advocated a high-tempo offense that required his players to shoot the ball within the first seven seconds of any possession.[citation needed] As of 2008, LMU games occupy the top five spots in the list of highest-scoring NCAA Division I basketball games.[citation needed] The Loyola Marymount men's basketball team will forever be remembered for the death of star player Hank Gathers (#44), who collapsed during the second round of the WCC tournament on March 4, 1990 and for his friendship with teammates Michael Craven (#21) and Bo Kimble (#30). Their jerseys have been retired at LMU.

[edit] Water polo

The women's water polo team was the WWPA Champion in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2007.

At the 2004 season, Loyola Marymount's women's water polo team lost to Southern California (USC), 10-8, at the NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship game played at Stanford University's Avery Aquatic Center.
