Loren Rolland Babe (also known as Bee Bee) is a former Major League Baseball third baseman. He was born on January 11, 1928 in Pisgah, Iowa. He was signed by the New York Yankees in the 1945 MLB amateur draft. In 2 seasons in the MLB, he played for the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Athletics. Babe had 85 hits in 382 at bats (a .223 average). After his playing days were over, Babe worked as a Minor League Manager and Major League Baseball coach. In 1983, while working for the Chicago White Sox, Babe was diagnosed with colon cancer. At the time Babe needed 57 days of major league service to become a vested member of the player's pension plan which also provides health benefits. The Sox decided to make Babe a Major League coach. At the same time the White Sox had another coach, Charlie Lau, who was battling cancer. Babe and Lau both made it through the 1983 season while undergoing cancer treatments. Loren Babe died on February 14, 1984 in Omaha, Nebraska. [edit] External links
