The London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Communities and Local Government, with directors appointed by the Secretary of State, including some democratically elected councillors. It is an urban Development Corporation that has been charged with redevelopment of two East London areas in the Thames Gateway that fall within Greater London:

• The Lower Lea Valley area in the boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest.

• The London Riverside on the north bank of the River Thames in the boroughs of Newham, Barking and Dagenham and Havering. The Riverside area is contiguous with the area covered by the Thurrock Development Corporation.

From October 2005, it has taken over certain planning functions from the councils of these boroughs in the designated area.

The LTGDC has £470 million of planned investment in Barking Town which will focus on revitalising the town centre, providing more jobs and homes, improving the transport interchange, enhancing connections to the surrounding area and creating a new cultural hub.

[edit] Rainham village

LTGDC plans to preserve and enhance the historic village character of Rainham. A new transport interchange and public square will form the first phase of the revitalised village centre. Further residential development will create a place for people to bring up their families in safe and sustainable neighbourhoods within a short commute of central London, but within minutes' walk to open countryside.

[edit] Dagenham Docks

An improved transport interchange is proposed to facilitate the planned growth in both jobs and homes in the Dagenham Dock area. To the south, the employment area has the potential to provide London with essential services with the initial focus on an environmental technologies cluster. To the north, a new community of approximately 5,000 people on brownfield land will be created linking into the existing residential area.

Leading a consortium of interests, the LTGDC are bringing to life Wildspace - which is set to be a huge 'green' asset for the South East. A new environmental and education centre will be followed by a host of innovative projects and visitor attractions, designed to make this a national destination attracting up to 1 million visitors.

[edit] The Olympic Fringe

LTGDC will harness the investment interest to deliver new, top quality business space in Hackney Wick, Fish Island and Stratford. LTGDC will ensure that quality infrastructure, homes and neighbourhood facilities are delivered which will benefit from easy access to the new parklands in the Lea Valley.

LTGDC are promoting sustained investment in homes and social infrastructure, neighbourhood facilities and better access across the river to ensure local people benefit from the planned growth over the next 20 years.

LTGDC is leading the regeneration of the centre of one of the most deprived communities in the UK. Canning Town will have a completely new town centre built around its excellent transport hub which will serve the needs of both the existing and incoming communities.

The extension of the Lower Lea Valley park along the river Lea, to its mouth at the Thames, will provide a range of leisure opportunities and better connections for the local population. The investment in open space will also support high density residential development in the surrounding area.
