[edit] EtymologyThe name comes from a bridge over the River Roding which had been demolished in 1921. The bridge was made of red brick, unlike other bridges in the area made of white stone. The name had first been applied to the Redbridge area and Redbridge tube station was opened in 1947. [edit] TransportThe National Express East Anglia services from Liverpool Street station passes through the borough east to west with stations at Ilford, Seven Kings and Goodmayes. These stations are planned to be converted for operation on the Crossrail route, except Ilford which will continue to be owned by National Express with Crossrail calling here. The London Underground Central Line also passes through the borough, with stations at Snaresbrook, South Woodford and Woodford on the Epping branch and Wanstead, Redbridge, Gants Hill, Newbury Park, Barkingside, Fairlop and Hainault on the Hainault branch, following the route of the A12 road from Wanstead to Newbury Park. Grange Hill station lies on the boundary between the London Borough of Redbridge and the Epping Forest district. Work is currently being carried out for a new Fast Reliable service from Ilford to Dagenham Dock named the East London Transit(ELT). When the ELT starts service, the route 179 will run from Chingford to Ilford Only as the ELT will run the Ilford to Barking Route via Ilford Lane. The are also plans to rename the route 369 to "TG1" as part of the new Thames Gateway Development. [edit] SportThere are two local football teams both playing in the Isthmian League [[Isthmian League Division One North|Division One North Redbrige FC and Ilford FC. The London Development Agency (LDA) have funded a new permanent road cycle circuit and mountain bike course at the Hog Hill cycle track – near the Hainault Forest Country Park, costing £5m. This replaces the former Eastway cycle facilities sited within the London Olympic Park. The council will be funding the facility up to the completion of the legacy London Velopark. [edit] EducationMain article: List of schools in the London Borough of Redbridge Redbridge is the Local Education Authority of the district. All schools in the borough take part in the Redbridge Schools' Choral Festival, a biennial music festival held in the Royal Albert Hall in Knightsbridge, London.[5] It was inaugurated in 1976.
