The Ljubljana Railway Station (Slovene: Železniška postaja Ljubljana) is the principal railway station in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It was built in 1849, when the Austrian Southern Railway, connecting Vienna and Trieste, reached Ljubljana. The building was renovated in 1980 by the architect Marko Mušič. James Joyce spent a night at the Ljubljana railway station on his way to Trieste in April 1904. In his honour a small monument was erected on Bloomsday in 2003. In 2008, the construction of a large multi-purpose complex began on the site of the railway station. The new complex will include several office buildings, shopping and entertainment centres, hotels and congress centres, as well as a residential complex. The present building of the Railway Station will be preserved and included in the newly established Ljubljana Passenger Centre Emonika. The project, carried out by the Hungary-based company TriGránit, is supposed to be completed in 2011. The Slovenian railway museum is located nearby.
