Some of Apple's multi-touch devices. From left to right: original iPhone, original iPod Touch (1G), iPhone 3G. This is a list and comparison of iPhone and iPod Touch models, two portable consumer electronics devices designed and marketed by Apple Inc. The iPhone is a multimedia smartphone, while the iPod Touch has no cell phone hardware. Both devices function as digital audio and portable media players and Internet clients. Both run iPhone OS on their multi-touch screens, which makes it easy to upgrade software (for which iPod Touch users must pay a fee). Apple upgrades its products' hardware periodically (approximately yearly), and each model is known as a "generation". There have been three generations of both the iPhone and the iPod Touch. The second generation of each is still available at a reduced price. [26] The reverse of the iPhone 3G (left) is almost identical to that of the 3GS, differentiated only by the latter's shinier text. The fronts of the original iPhone (left) and the iPhone 3G are almost indistinguishable. The original iPod Touch (1G) (left), viewed next to the original iPhone (right). The original iPod Touch is easily identified by its lack of a polished metal border. [edit] Battery life Apple runs tests on pre-production units to determine battery life. However, these are purported maximums ("up to"), and actual user experiences vary.[10][27][28][29][30] All numbers are in hours. | Original | 3G | 3GS | Touch | Touch 2G | Touch 3G | | Video | 7 | 7 | 10 | 5 | 6 | 6 | | Music | 24 | 24 | 30 | 22 | 36 | 30 | | Web browsing (Wi-Fi) | 6 | 6 | 9 | 5[citation needed] | 6[citation needed] | Unknown | | Web browsing (3G) | N/A | 5 | 5 | N/A | N/A | N/A | | 2G phone | 8 | 12 | 12 | N/A | N/A | N/A | | 3G phone | N/A | 5 | 5 | N/A | N/A | N/A | | Standby | 250 | 300 | 300 | 200[citation needed] | 300[citation needed] | Unknown | [edit] Storage Apple has increased the storage capacity of its devices over time.
