The following is a list of characters appearing in the video game Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The cast of Metal Gear Solid 4 is comprised primarily of returning characters from previous Metal Gear Solid games, although a few new characters are introduced as well.
[edit] Main characters[edit] Old SnakeMain article: Solid Snake
Old Snake (previously known as Solid Snake) reprises his role as the protagonist and main playable character of the game. Aging rapidly due to advanced cellular degeneration, Snake undergoes his final mission to terminate Liquid Ocelot. [edit] OtaconSolid Snake's sidekick since the first Metal Gear Solid, returns to assist him once again via Codec. He builds several of the equipment used by Snake on his mission, such as the Octocamo suit and Metal Gear Mk. II/III, Snake's robotic companions. Otacon is once again voiced by Christopher Randolph in the English version and Hideyuki Tanaka in Japanese. [edit] RaidenMain article: Raiden (Metal Gear) The protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2. After the events of the Big Shell mission, Raiden ended his relationship with Rosemary and disappeared after rescuing Sunny from the Patriots. He returns in the game outfitted in a Cyborg Ninja exoskeleton and helps Snake during his mission. He is once again voiced by Quinton Flynn in English and Kenyu Horiuchi in Japanese. [edit] Naomi HunterThe FOXHOUND medic who injected Snake with the FOXDIE virus in Metal Gear Solid. She has been kidnapped by Liquid Ocelot and forced to help him hijack the SOP system. She is rescued by Snake in South America and assists him and his crew thorough the remainder of the story: becoming romantically involved with Otacon and develops a friendship with Sunny. [edit] Supporting characters[edit] SunnyThe daughter of Olga Gurlukovich from Metal Gear Solid 2. After the Big Shell Incident, Sunny was rescued from the Patriots by Raiden and taken under the custody of Snake and Otacon. She is a gifted computer programmer who, along with Naomi Hunter, designs FOXALIVE, the virus which Snake uses to disable the Patriots' AIs. Sunny is voiced by Christina Pucelli in the English version and Kikuko Inoue (the voice of Rosemary and The Boss) in Japanese. [edit] Drebin 893A weapons launderer who assists Snake by disabling ID-tagged weapons taken from PMC troops, usually accompanied by his pet monkey, Little Gray. He also provides exposition on the origins of each of the B&B members. Drebin is actually a Patriots' spy assigned to help Snake defeat Liquid Ocelot. He injects Snake with a syringe that secretly contains a new strain of FOXDIE programmed to kill EVA, Ocelot and Big Boss; in addition to the nanomachines allowing Snake to use Drebin's weapons. Drebin is voiced by Khary Payton in the English version and Keiji Fujiwara (the voice of Sigint) in Japanese. [edit] Roy CampbellSolid Snake's commanding officer in Metal Gear 2 and Metal Gear Solid. He assigns Snake on an unofficial mission to assassinate Liquid Ocelot and foil his insurrection. To protect Raiden and Rosemary's child from The Patriots, he arranges a fake marriage with Rosemary and pretends to be the father of Raiden's son. This ploy causes a rift between Campbell and Meryl, who is now aware that Campbell is her biological father. Campbell is once again voiced by Paul Eiding in the English version and Takeshi Aono in Japanese. [edit] Mei LingThe data analyst who saved the player's progress in the first Metal Gear Solid. In Metal Gear Solid 4, she is the Captain of the recommissioned vessel USS Missouri and lends her support to Snake and Raiden in their assault of Shadow Moses. Mei Ling is once again voiced by Kim Mai Guest in the English version and Houko Kuwashima in Japanese. [edit] RosemaryRaiden's former girlfriend from Metal Gear Solid 2, she appears as a psychological counselor in a combat stress platoon, offering her advice to Snake on dealing with stress. She gave birth to Raiden's son, Little John, but hid the child from him and then had Campbell posed as the child's father after arranging a fake marriage. [edit] Big MamaThe leader of the resistance group Paradise Lost, who assists Snake in his battle against Liquid Ocelot. Big Mama is the new identity of EVA, the Chinese spy who assisted Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3. After failing to fulfill her mission in Snake Eater, she was invited by Big Boss to form part of The Patriots and then became the surrogate mother who gave birth to Solid and Liquid. After Big Boss's supposed death, Big Mama conspired with Ocelot to kill the other Patriots to avenge him, leading to the deaths of Para-Medic (Dr. Clark) and Sigint (Donald Anderson). She was one who reconstructed Big Boss's body, using spare parts from Solidus' and Liquid's remains. She then uses Solidus' body as a decoy for Big Boss's. Big Mama is voiced by Lee Meriwether in the English version and Mari Natsuki in Japanese. [edit] Rat Patrol Team 01 (RAT PT 01)A splinter unit of FOXHOUND under secret orders of the UN to investigate PMC activity. There are many teams working over the world, many of which have been killed, believed to be enemy combatants. They perform in secret so that PMCs can be observed directly in action instead of under false circumstances. The teams are given the ability to share their scenes through SOP. It is revealed at the end of the game by Drebin that a lose anagram of RAT PT 01 spells out PATR10T. That they were under Patriot orders. [edit] Meryl SilverburghThe heroine from Metal Gear Solid, Meryl is now the leader of Rat Patrol Team 01, a division of the USACIDC sent to investigate Liquid Ocelot's PMC activities. She is now aware that Roy Campbell is her true father, but resents him due to his marriage with Rosemary. [edit] Johnny (Akiba)A former Genome Soldier, Johnny was the guard who was stripped by Meryl in the first Metal Gear Solid. He serves as Rat Patrol's electronic expert. Like in the original, he suffers from constant diarrhea. He is the only member of the team that was not injected with nanomachines, which becomes a benefit after the SOP system is taken over by Liquid Ocelot. He reveals he has been infatuated with Meryl since their first encounter and they end up being married in the end of the game. [edit] JonathanThe other two members of Rat Patrol. Jonathan is a hulking Korean-American who serves as the team's heavy weapons specialist and has a mohawk in the shape of an exclamation mark, which is first emphasized with the classic alert noise when an enemy first detects you. He is thought to have died from bullet wounds when Liquid takes control of SOP, but he attends Meryl's wedding at the end. He is named after the main character in Policenauts. [edit] EdEd is an African-American who serves as the team's sniper and Meryl's second-in-command. He is presumed to have died from bullet wounds during Liquids initial take over, but he returns with Jonathan at Meryl's wedding. He is also named after a character from Policenauts, where Meryl originally debuted as a supporting character. [edit] Outer Haven[edit] Liquid OcelotLiquid Ocelot, formerly known as Revolver Ocelot, was an agent of The Patriots who lost his right arm in Metal Gear Solid and received a replacement transplant from Liquid Snake in Metal Gear Solid 2, causing it to appear that Liquid's personality takes over Ocelots mind. In Metal Gear Solid 4, his Liquid persona seems to have taken full possession of his mind, and he forms the private military company Outer Heaven to destroy The Patriots, this company also has the 5 other major PMC's under its control. Liquid Ocelot is first seen at the end of Act 1 - Liquid Sun when Snake finally locates him, but Snake is unable to finish his mission here because Liquid has triggered his first experiment with the SOP System and Snake is caught in the "cross-fire". The soldiers unable to control their emotions after SOP is disabled, the experiment also effects Snake with his last generation nanomachines going haywire and Liquid escapes. Knowing Snake is after him Liquid informs the Beauty and the Beast Corps that killing Snake would ease their emotional pain and Snake becomes their only target, and they become the "SNAKEHOUND" unit. Snake catches up with Liquid again at the end of Act 2 - Solid Sun on his mission to save Naomi Hunter, he triggers another experiment by testing an injection of suppressor nanomachines developed by Naomi. The test is a success the soldiers on the helicopter are able to maintain emotional control, but the remaining soldiers are put into a zombie like state. It is revealed that Liquid doesn't only want to bring down the Patriots he wants to control the world. Liquid again appears at the end Act 3 - Third Sun, using the captured body of Big Boss (who is actually Solidus, a genetic match of unlike Liquid and Solid Snake) to gain access to SOP. He demonstrates his powers on the Army-Marines joint unit and Rat Patrol Team 01 who attempt to bring him down, he locks up their weapons and disables their Nanomachines with his own and the emotional shock of SOPS (Sons of the Patriots Syndrome) sets in, Liquid makes his escape with the worlds PMCs under his control under control, and opposition nearly impossible with any guns not under his commmand locked out. Liquid may have SOP under his control but to bring the Patriots down and to establish himself as ruler of the world through the Patriots own systems of control to run the world. To do this he need to place the rebuilt GW as the primary AI in the system. Originally the second in command in the Ai pecking order if Liquid can destroy JD the head AI, GW under his control can be used to control the remaining AI and the world. To do this he needs to destroy JD the primary AI, which happens to be orbiting the earth as part of a satellite. The resources Liquid needs are only available on the forgotten island of Shadow Moses, where old nukes not locked by the AIs and a firing mechanism for them can be found, the rail gun from Metal Gear REX. Attempting to stop Snake chases down Liquid, and confronts him on Shadow Moses with the repaired REX without its rail gun against Liquid's Metal Gear RAY. Snake wins against the Anti-Metal Gear but Liquid escapes to Outer Haven, a modified Arsenal Gear where he plans to use the newly mounted rail gun to fire the nuke from the center of the ocean. But before Liquid can complete his plan Snake destroys GW with the FOXALIVE virus. Without his overwhelming unmanned forces controlled by GW the small Marine force from the USS Missori siege control of Outer Haven. Liquid finds the worn out and wounded Snake, he takes him to the top of Outer Haven. He injects him with Nanomachines capable to repairing damaged tissue, and the to begin with a final showdown fist fight similar to the ending of Metal Gear Solid. The battle rages through the history of the Metal Gear Solid series with the HUDs changing and Ocelot perofminf his signature moves. Beginning with the original, playing the theme song and displaying the same style HUDs, Solid Snake vs Liquid Snake. Continuing into Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty with Solid Snake against Liquid Ocelot, again playing the sequel's theme. Ending with Naked Snake versus Revolver Ocelot, starting with his MGS3 signature gesture. The battle ends with Solid finishing off Liquid, unknowing killing him with another FOXDIE virus, the same fate that Liquid originally suffered. It is revealed that Liquids plan was not to take over the world through the AI System but to tricking the Patriots into destroying themselves. They manipulated Snake to kill Liquid but they did not count on Liquid taking over SOP and Snake destroying their AI System with FOXALIVE. It is later divulged by Big Boss that "Liquid Ocelot" never actually existed, but was a rouse perpetrated by manipulating his Nanomachines and through self hypnosis. He used uses this act to fool the Patriots into believing that Liquid had taken him over and that their former agent Ocelot was gone along with all the secrets that he knew. Liquid Ocelot is voiced by Pat Zimmerman in the English version and Banjo Ginga (the voice of Liquid Snake) in Japanese. Koji Totani, the original Japanese voice of Revolver Ocelot, died before the release of the game, although his voice recordings from previous games are used in the Japanese version. [edit] VampThe sole surviving member of Dead Cell from Metal Gear Solid 2 appears as a mercenary working for Liquid Ocelot, who develops a rivalry with Raiden. His apparent immortality is explained as being caused by rapid-healing nanomachines in his body. This benefit is removed by Snake through an injection of a specialized syringe prepared by Naomi, allowing Raiden to mortally wound him. Vamp is voiced once again by Phil LaMarr in the English version. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by film director Shinya Tsukamoto, who replaces Ryotaro Okiayu (his original seiyu in Metal Gear Solid 2). [edit] The Beauty and the Beast Corps
The Beauty and the Beast Unit is an all-female paramilitary force who serve as four of the game's bosses. Their animal names openly reference the members of FOXHOUND from Metal Gear Solid, and the emotions relating to the Cobra Unit from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The members are civilians who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, who cope with the damage done to their minds by becoming war machines. Their inner appearance is referred to as "Beauty", while their outer appearance is referred to as "Beast". Four actual models were chosen for their in-game appearances as their "Beauty" side: Lyndall Jarvis, Scarlett Chorvat, Mieko Rye, and Yumi Kikuchi. The English dubbing for the characters is done by having the female voice actors perform the lines while Fred Tatasciore overdubs on top of the female voices, creating a split-voice effect for the characters.[1] [edit] Screaming Mantis
Screaming Mantis is perhaps the most powerful and intimidating member of the Beauty and the Beast Corps. Able to fly by some kind of unknown ability, it's rather apparent that she has great mental abilities that allow her to crush people at will. Additionally, it seems as though she can take control of the minds of soldiers, manipulating them like puppets to do her bidding, including killing their former allies. Turning these men into marionettes seems to be a particular favorite of hers; in fact, dangling from the many arms of Mantis are two puppets that appear to be Psycho Mantis from MGS1 and The Sorrow from MGS3. It has been revealed that the Psycho Mantis puppet is used to controls and manipulates living people while The Sorrow puppets can be used to manipulate dead bodies. However, her powers are limited by the fact that they only work by manipulating the nanomachines inside a person, meaning people who do not have nanomachines or who have the ability to suppress them are effectively immune to her powers. [edit] Crying Wolf
Crying Wolf is the physically strongest member of the Corps, attacking with a rail gun and sheer brute force. Her olfactory system is particularly strong, being able to smell her opponents on the battlefield. She was born in an unnamed village in Africa, in a country afflicted by civil war. After her family was killed in an attack, Wolf fled the village with her baby brother and became a refugee. When hiding from an enemy unit in a shack, her brother began to cry; she covered his mouth to silence him and accidentally smothered him to death. Upon reaching a refugee camp, Wolf was driven insane by her grief and by the cries of children. She experienced visions of a wolf killing the children of the camp; in reality, it was she who did so. Crying Wolf does not accept that she killed the children until she is defeated by Snake. Upon her death, her corpse is taken away by one of Sniper Wolf's wolves. Crying Wolf's "Beauty" form is based on model Mieko Rye. [edit] Laughing Octopus
Laughing Octopus is a master of camouflage, disguising as various things including a muscle anatomy mannequin, painting, dead Haven solider, and a wall. This is all possible, because of her Octocamo, which is also apart of her helmet. She also wields a FaceCamo Mask, which can either blend into the surrounding environment or change into the face of anyone. This allows maximum camouflage. Octopus also has control of four robotic tentacles. They can send an electric charge toward a captured enemy.Occansionally she curls into a ball and soots out an inky smoke. She commonly uses the tentacles to strangle her enemies, but she also impales them into her enemy's body. Her other weapon is a P90 Submachine Gun. Laughing Octopus grew up in a Scandinavian Village which was attacked by nearby villagers who forced Laughing Octopus to kill all her family and friends and bathe in their blood. She was forced to do so while laughing else she would also lose her life. Nobody else in the village survived, other than her. She never stops her tormented laughing until defeated by Snake. [edit] Raging Raven
Raging Raven is an aerial based member of the Corps, utilzing UCAVs and a grenade launcher to attack her enemies. Born in Aceh, Indonesia, Raging Raven was taken as a prisoner of war as a child. After enduring months of torture and starvation, Raven's captors abruptly abandoned the prison, leaving her and the other child prisoners to be eaten alive by ravens. Raven was the last living child; though instead of eating her, the ravens pecked away her bonds. Raven found the base camp of the group that had tortured her and killed both the soldiers and civilians residing there. [edit] Psycho Mantis
The ghost of Psycho Mantis makes a cameo following Snake's defeat of Screaming Mantis. Psycho Mantis attempts his fourth wall-breaking tricks from Metal Gear Solid, but is thwarted by the PlayStation 3's use of a hard drive instead of memory cards and the SIXAXIS's lack of a rumble feature. However, if using a DualShock 3, Mantis will triumphantly proclaim that Vibration is Back. Also if the player attempts to defeat Screaming Mantis similar to Psycho Mantis; i.e. by changing the controller slots Otacon will inform Snake that won't work. Also Campbell suggests to reveal Screaming Mantis' face similar to the optional way that Psycho Mantis can be killed. It is revealed that Psycho Mantis was actually the leader of the BB Corps, his powerful psyche grafted into the frail mind of Screaming Mantis, allowing him to control the rest of the squad mentally. [edit] The original Patriots[edit] ZeroBig Boss's commanding officer and close friend in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. After the events of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, he forms the Patriots along with Big Boss using the funds amassed from the Philosopher's Legacy. After a fallout between the two spawning from the distrust Big Boss gained for Zero after the latter used the former for experimental cloning use without his approval, Big Boss broke away from the Patriots and formed Outer Heaven. After Big Boss' betrayal of him, Zero no longer trusted the next generation with control over The Patriots, and instead constructed five AIs to succeed him. By the time of Metal Gear Solid 4, Zero is over 100-years-old and in a vegetative state. He is unvoiced. [edit] Big BossMain article: Big Boss (Metal Gear) Believed to had been killed by Solid Snake in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Big Boss is revealed to be alive, having been placed in an artificially-induced coma following his supposed death. His burnt body had been reconstructed with spare parts from Liquid's and Solidus' remains. He appears in the game's ending to reconcile with Solid Snake before dying for the third and final time as a result of coming into contact with Snake who had been injected with a new strain of FOXDIE that he was one of the targets of. Big Boss is voiced by Richard Doyle (the voice of The Fury) in the English version and Chikao Ohtsuka (Akio Ohtsuka's father) in Japanese. [edit] References
