The opening episode in the series starts with Will entering the Banks house and mistaking Geoffrey the Butler for his uncle Phillip Banks and decides to carry him. Later Will meets his real uncle and makes jokes about his weight. Later in his new bedroom Uncle Phil tells Will to clean up and encourages him to be more like Carlton. Uncle Phil has a party in hopes that the guests (many of whom hold positions in governmental authority) will assist him in becoming an arbiter of justice. Unfortunately, Will ruins the evening, and has already proved to be a negative influence on the family, as Phil has asked Ashley to praise the lord for this dinner, but instead she raps it. Surprisingly, it turns out that everyone the family is beginning to grow fond of Will. Uncle Phil explains how he "also grew up on the streets" and respected Malcolm X who is Will's hero; but he also uses his mind and works hard to achieve and so should Will.

He tried to ease the blow to Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv by also getting them a gift each, which consisted of fake jewellery. Then he reveals that he has already hired Ashley a teacher, Jazz.

Will tries to impress a girl's father so that he can date her, so Philip, Carlton and Geoffrey try to teach him how to be a gentleman in a My Fair Lady way. It teaches him nothing but to always be himself as the girl had been feeling suffocated by her father's ways and was looking for a release in a boy "from the hood".

Philip's parents come to visit for the weekend when he wins a prestigious award. It's revealed Uncle Phil's nickname is Zeke. A reporter comes to the Banks' house to interview Philip about his life, but plans to kill the story for finding him boring. Will, having heard her saying that, tells her embarrassing stories about Philip's past "barnyard life" he heard from Philip's parents. This goes down well with the newspaper editors, and Uncle Phil's parents, but Uncle Phil seems ashamed until he makes his acceptance speech when he shows renewed pride in his roots.

Will gets a visit from an old pal named Ice Tray, who, to Vivian's and Philip's dismay, warms up to Hilary. Don Cheadle guest stars. Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv try and discourage Hilary from falling in love with him by feining great warmth to the idea until she jokingly says she is going to marry him to gauge their reaction, which is outrage. In the end Will confides to Aunt Viv just how good a friend Ice Tray had been to him when he was the only studious kid from a class of drop-outs in Philadelphia.

While Philip and Vivian go on a trip to Palm Springs in Mr. Furth's helicopter, Will and Carlton drive Furth's car there as well. They get pulled over for "stealing" the car. Hilary babysits Ashley as Geoffrey has the weekend off. Luckily, Will was able to get his Uncle Phil's attention by telling a phony confession on TV and he and Carlton were free. In the end, Hilary was grounded for making Jeffery pick up the phone when he was off duty as Phil and Carlton promised to never let any incident like this happen again.

The family pressures Will to enter an after school program. Following the girls into a Poetry class, he makes up a poem on the spot to impress them and says it was made by a poet who he thought he was making up spontaneously but in reality exists as Rafeal de la Ghetto, and is known to the teacher. Christina asks to bring him to Poetry Night and, after Jazz doesn't come through with an impostor, Will uses Geoffrey to masquerade as the poet and when Christina finds out she goes out with Jazz instead.

Vivian sings in a Record-A-Song booth. When Hilary forgets to take a hat off Ashley and walks out of the store with it, they get accused of theft.

Will and Carlton both try to win Melinda over by making up stories about themselves. She ultimately chooses Carlton over Will, though she hides a secret. Luckily Will found a date named Cindy (who was actually a waitress) who came to the party. Carlton thinks he still won the bet but when the security guard who accused Hilary arrested Melinda for robbing the Banks of their valuable items, Carlton whimpers as he lost his date and Will won the bet as he and Cindy dance at the party.

It is Geoffrey's birthday and Will decides to set him up on a blind date as a gift. Will winds up thinking she is perfect and breaks up the two dancing at a nightclub. Later when Geoffrey comes home, he gives Will Helen's phone number stating she would be more fit for Will. Naomi Campbell guest stars.

Will joins the school basketball team with Carlton already on it. Will becomes the star of the team, while Carlton becomes jealous and the competition between the two starts. In the peak of his jealousy, Carlton decides to steal the ball from Will and take the game's winning shot.

In order to get the family car instead of Will, Hilary rats him out for several things, including getting in at 3 a.m. the previous day. Will plans revenge; while going to find out where Hilary is shopping, he learns that she dropped out of college three months ago. Will uses this in order to get Hilary to slave for him while he is punished. Hilary tries to get Carlton to go against Will, but he also uses it against her.

Lady Penelope winds up not being what Will thought she was.

It upsets Will that he fails so they next day they have an argument but wind up liking each other. Will starts taking time away from her studies and Aunt Viv tells him to cut back on seeing her so she can have a good future ahead of her. Vivian winds up lecturing Kayla and revealing things about her struggle to be successful.

Vivian goes away to Berkeley for the weekend, leaving Hilary in charge of the house while Philip is at the office. Will steals the car keys to go to the pool hall he winds up losing his money and the car to a hustler. Philip goes down to the pool hall to claim the money back. First he threatened to have the teller and hustler's licences revoked but Fred and the hustlers defy him by saying they have no licence and taunted him into playing pool with them.Fortunitly, Phil was able to teach the hustlers a lesson by beating the crime lord in a pool game without getting any fowls, claiming back $900 dollars. After all the pool hustlers at the pool house were arrested for not having any licenses, Phil tells Will explains to Will that the only reason why he did not want him to go to the pool house was only to make sure that he doesn't lose his money.

Will will only do it if Hilary goes on a date with Jazz. Queen Latifah guest stars.

When the bully's parents bring her over to the Banks', her parents start on Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv; after a your Momma joke directed at Uncle Phil takes things too far, Uncle Phil punches the bully's father.

When Phillip calls Will Carlton several times Will becomes paranoid that he is becoming like Carlton and living totally off Uncle Phil. Homecoming is on the way and Phillip offers Will money for it. Will decides to take matters into his own hands and gets a job as a waiter in a pirate themed restaurant. Due to his disguise Uncle Phil originally doesn't recognize him and Will tries to get away with some insults. In the end they make up once Uncle Phil realizes why it was honorable that Will chose this way; and Will realizes it is fine to get help to succeed.

Will returns home from spending the summer in Philadelphia with a new look that doesn't sit well with Uncle Phil. It angers Phillip even more when Ashley starts to pick up Will's habits. Will disrupts a catered event hosted at the Banks' in aid of Uncle Phil's partners and clients, with his unusual dress-sense and use of a beeper. When Phil tells Will to get rid of the clothes, the messy hair an the beeper, Will defys him by not acknowleging him and runs away and tries to stay at Jazz's, who kicks him out. Will gets picked up by a police officer. In the end of the episode Ashley, Carlton, and Hilary, attempt to take Will's side to press for further privileges from their parents. Uncle Phil decides that the best way of handling this is to say that they are all grounded, except for Will, untill the clothes and hair he's wearing are taken off.

Carlton prepares for a dinner date with his former girlfriend, Cindy, forgiving her for rejecting him several months earlier, but when she arrives with a newborn baby named Carlton Jr., the entire Banks family is stunned. Philip refuses to believe that the baby is his grandchild until a blood test proves it; Vivian reprimands Cindy for not coming to them for advice. Will, however, suspects that the inexperienced Carlton never had a chance to father a baby. Determined to accept his responsibility, Carlton elopes with Cindy to a small-town chapel. While waiting for the preacher to marry them, they realize that they're too young and too incompatible to spend the rest of their lives together. When Will arrives at the chapel to stop the ceremony, he learns that Cindy has confessed that Carlton wasn't the baby's father and called her parents to take her home, leaving Carlton bewildered and heartbroken. Carlton meekly confesses to Will that he's still a virgin, but was willing to marry Cindy, hoping that someday she'd learn to love him in return. Will reveals he is a virgin too, to console Carlton. Philip intends to railroad the ineffectual Judge Robertson off the bench; and Will becomes the "love slave" of a flamboyantly generous plain student. Sherman Hemsley guest stars. Will accepts many expensive gifts off her including tickets to the Los Angeles Lakers game, a Harley Davidson and a jacket emblazoned with a motif of his hero Malcolm X. In the end she reveals actually she does not even like him and she was doing this for his attention for her own gains regarding image, because he was captain of basketball and lots of other girls do like him.

Will gets arrested for numerous parking tickets as Phil runs for judge against incumbent Judge Robertson.

Philip takes Will and Carlton on a camping trip that turns out to be a disaster when snow traps the unhappy campers. In the end they wake up to discover that the bag of cash they had discovered in their cave and burned for warmth could have been theirs legitimately as prize money for a TV challenge. Will had in fact stashed some of that cash in his pants to prevent it getting burned by the other two.

The Banks are invited on The Oprah Winfrey Show as a replacement family, but what Will doesn't know is that there isn't room for him to go on. He disrupts the show and it leads to Uncle Phil's public ratings to go down.

This prompts Will to tell the story of his dead-beat father and tells Carlton that he's just a selfish brat.
